Men's Basketball Battles in Setback at Connecticut College

THE BASICS

-The Lead: The Clark University men's basketball team battled hard in an ultimate setback at Connecticut College on Tuesday evening in non-conference action. After trailing by as many as 20 points in the first half, the Cougars fought back to tie game in the second half, 78-78, with just under three minutes remaining. The Camels pulled together for the final minutes of play to hold on for the final 87-83 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-First year Matt Carlin (Syracuse, N.Y.) went a perfect 4-for-4 from three-point range and hit one from inside the arc to lead the Camels with 14 points in the first half. Sophomore Dan Draffin (Hamden, Conn.) added six points on free throws and eight points on a 4-for-6 effort from the field to add another 14 points for the hosts. First year Joel Arteaga (Wyncote, Penn.) led the Cougars with nine first half points while sophomore Tyler Davern (Webster, Mass.) put up eight. After the first 20 minutes of play, Connecticut College took a 51-34 lead into the halftime break.

-The Cougars came out of the break with an early 7-2 rally to climb back within six of the hosts. The rally was highlighted by back-to-back three's from Davern and seven more points from Arteaga including one from the behind the arc (57-51). Sophomore Matthew Waggett (Saugus, Mass.) completed a three-point play with a good basket from the free throw line to bring Clark within three with 13:12 on the clock (60-57). The Camels climbed back to a nine-point lead with another three from Carlin and a jumper and a pair of free-throws from senior Phil Leotsakos (Arlington, Mass.). Back-to-back drives to basket from junior Brendan Kittredge (Clinton, Mass.) brought Clark back within five (70-65) with 7:43 on the clock. After climbing back to an 11-point lead Kittredge brought the Cougars back within eight with a basket from behind the arc, and three made free-throws from Arteaga brought Clark within five with 4:09 to play.

-The Cougars took charge with back-to-back layups from Kittredge and sophomore Biko Gayman (Fort Pierce, Fla.) and a three from Arteaga to tie the game at 78 apiece with 2:17 to play. After a battle at the free throw line for the final minutes of play, Gayman and first year Sean Christy (Cumberland, R.I.) made successful drives to the basket but the Camels held on for the 87-83 victory.

 INSIDE THE NUMBERS

-Arteaga led all players with 22 points on the night and added a team high seven rebounds. Davern added 19 points, five rebounds, two blocks, and three steals while Kittredge rounded out double-digit scoring for Clark with 17 points of his own.

-Draffan and Carlin each put up 18 points for the Camels. Sophomore Jack Zimmerman (Bedford, N.H.) led the hosts under the basket with eight rebounds.

-Connecticut College shot 50% (25-50) from the field while Clark shot 42.3% (30-for-71).

-The Camels shot 33.3% from three-point range (6-18) while the Cougars shot 28.6% (6-for-21)

-Clark held a slight advantage at the free-throw line, shooting 82% (17-for-21) while Connecticut College shot 79.5% (31-for-39)

-The hosts outrebounded Clark 40-30.

-Clark forced the Camels to turn the ball over 22 times and converted those into 19 points.
