Corsairs Outlast Cougars in Lafrance Hospitality Classic

-The Lead: The Clark University men's basketball team fell in their first game of the Lafrance Hospitality Classic on Friday evening. Clark sophomore Tyler Davern (Webster, Mass.) led all players with 25 points on the night. The two team will play again at UMass-Dartmouth on Saturday.


-The Corairs pulled ahead 12-5 early in the first when Arinze Obiora (Hyde Park, Mass.) hit a jumper from the wing and Marquis Jones (Randolph, Mass.) made a successful drive to the basket at the 13:28 mark. A 4-1 run including a three-pointer from Davern, a layup from junior Brendan Kittredge (Clinton, Mass.), and back to back layups from first year Joel Arteaga (Wyncote, Penn.) and sophomore Biko Gayman (Fort Pierce, Fla.) helped the Cougars come back to tie the game at 14 apiece with with 11 minutes to play in the half.

-With 5:27 on the clock first year Marcus Azor (Brockton, Mass.) finished with a dunk to pull ahead 27-24 and sophomore Jake Ashworth (Fairhaven, Mass.) pulled up for a jumper 30 seconds later to extend their lead to 29-24. An Ashworth three with 3:30 on the clock put the Corsairs up by eight, 34-26. Clark sophomore Anthony Grzembski (Webster, Mass.) hit a free throw for the Cougars to close out the half, but the Corsairs carried a nine point lead into the break (36-27).

-Clark started scoring in the second half when Charles Stevens (Bronx, N.Y.) stepped behind the arc and knocked down a three to bring them within six. UMass Dartmouth then went on a 10-1 0 run that was highlighted with another dunk, this time from Obiora, to pull ahead 53-36.

-Arteaga had a three-point play for Clark when he finished an and-one play at the free-throw line as the Cougars trailed by 13 with 13 minutes to play, 54-41. This sparked a 4-0 rally  including a pair of free-throws and a three-pointer from Davern to bring Clark within 11 with just under 11 minutes to play. This rally forced the Corsairs to call a timeout. Out of the break Ashworth drained a three and Obiora knocked home another dunk to put the hosts back up by 16 (63-47). The hosts went on to take the 81-64 victory.


-Davern led the Cougars with 25 points to go along with four rebounds. Kittredge chipped in with 10 points and five rebounds.

-Obiora led UMass-Dartmouth with 23 points and Ashworth added 14. Jones led all rebounders with 10.

-The Corsairs shot 52.9% from field goal range while the Cougars shot 36.5%. Clark shot 25% from behind the arc and the Corsairs shot 20%. The hosts outrebounded Clark 48-33.


-Clark and UMass-Dartmouth are both back in action tomorrow for another game in the Lafrance Hospitality Classic at the Tripp Center.
