-The Lead: The Clark University men's basketball team defeated the Bears of Coast Guard Academy in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday afternoon. Prior to the start of the game the men's basketball team recognized senior John Pisacreta (Andover, Mass.) for senior day. Pisacreta had an outstanding game, posting a game high 20 points to lead the Cougars to victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Bears opened up scoring on a jumper from sophomore Justin Kane (Arnold, Md.) but the Cougars took a 5-2 lead when freshman Biko Gayman (Fort Pierce, Fla.) hit a three-pointer and a jumper to get the hosts on the board.
-A 3-1 Cougar run including threes from Pisacreta and Anthony Grzembski (Webster, Mass.) gave the hosts a four point lead with 14:55 on the clock. Clark started to pull away on a 3-0 run for an eight point lead when Grzembski found his way under the hoop for two at the 12:32 mark, 19-11.
-Coast Guard tied it back up when Packy Witkowski (Melrose, Mass.) and Paul Costain (Naples, Fla.) started a 5-0 run with back-to-back three-pointers. Costain added a layup and a free-throw to even the score to 27-27 with 7:41 to play.
- Clark responded with 4-0 run of their own highlighted by back-to-back threes from Luca McCormick
(Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and capped off by a three from Pisacreta for the 11 point lead, 38-27, with 6:17 to play.
-The Cougars extended their lead to 15 when Pisacreta, Gayman, and freshman Patrick Bugler (Marblehead, Mass.) all added baskets for the 44-29 advantage with 4:20 on the clock.
-The Bears cut their deficit to nine when Noah Baldez (Lower Gwynedd, Penn.) found Luke Daniels (Paintsville, Ky.) behind the arc for three but the Cougars held onto a 49-40 lead heading into the halftime break.
-Pisacreta finished the half leading all scorers with 15 points.
-Tyler Davern (Webster, Mass.) and Grzembski hit back-to-back shots to give Clark a 13 point lead to start the second half. The hosts extended their lead to as much as 17 when Grzembski came up with a steal and a fast-break layup with 17:13 to play, 61-44.
-Daniels added five points from two jumpers and a free-throw to bring the Bears back within 12, 63-51, with 14:36 on the clock.
-Clark went on a 6-0 run including seven points from Adam Converse (Woodstock, Conn.) to take their largest lead of the game, 77-51, with 11:06 to play.
-The Bears came back within 19 with 4:51 to play, but that was as close as they would come. Clark took the final 97-75 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Pisacreta led all scorers with 20 points on the day. McCormick recorded a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Gayman added 17 points in the victory while Grzembski and Converse rounded up double-digit for the Cougars scoring with 11 points each.
-Daniels led the Bears with 14 points and Witkowski followed him with 11 points in the setback.
-Clark shot 57.1% (36-63) from the field while Coast Guard shot 42.2%.
-Clark shot 84.2% from the free-throw line and outrebounded the Bears 42-31.
-The hosts forced 16 Coast Guard turnovers and converted them into 22 points.
-Coast Guard forced Clark to turn the ball over 15 times and added 20 points off of those errors.
-The Cougar's bench exploded for 26 points in the victory.
-Clark hosts MIT on Wednesday, February 14th for a NEWMAC matchup at 7:00 p.m.
-Coast Guard is back at home on the same day when they host Wheaton College at 5:30 p.m.
