Lions Outlast Cougars in Overtime Thriller

-The Lead: The Lions of Emerson College outlasted the Clark University men's basketball team in an overtime thriller on Wednesday evening in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action in Boston, Mass. Senior John Pisacreta (Andover, Mass.) led all scorers with 27 points for Clark in the setback.


First Half

-The Cougars hopped on the board first with back to back layups from junior Adam Converse (Woodstock, Conn.) for the early 4-0 lead. They extended their lead to 10-2 when Pisacreta sank two three-pointers in just 30 seconds.

-Freshman Anthony Grzembski (Webster, Mass.) found space beyond the arc and added three for the Cougars for a nine point lead with 15:38 on the clock.

-The Lions came back within two with 4:48 to play when senior Michael Sheng (Altadena, Calif.) hit a three-pointer and tied the game up at 35 apiece when junior Geoffrey Gray (Newton, Mass.) sank a jumper with 1:47 to play.

-Clark finished the first half on a 3-1 run that included two layups from first year Biko Gayman (Fort Pierce, Fla.) and a three from Grzembski for the 42-37 lead heading into the halftime break.

Second Half

-Converse got things started again in the second half as he drained a three-pointer to give the visitors the eight point lead with 19:20 on the clock, 45-37.

-Pisacreta extended their lead to ten points when he hit long threes at the 14:19 mark and the 12:21 mark for the 64-54 advantage.

-Sophomore Jack O'Connor (Newport, R.I.) added three for the Lions when Jacob Ries (Mesa, Ariz.) found him open at the top of the arc to close the gap to seven but the Cougars responded with a layup from Pisacreta and free throw from Tyler Davern (Webster, Mass.) to extend their lead back to ten, 68-58, with 8:22 to play.

-Grzembski hit back to back threes to give Clark their largest lead of the game, 11 points, with under five minutes to play, 76-65, but a 3-0 run highlighted by a three from O'Connor brought the hosts back within three with 3:02 to play, 76-73.

-Sheng was the hero for the hosts when he hit a three with a Clark defender's hand in his face to tie the game up at 83-83 with just six seconds on the clock and send the two teams into overtime play.


-Sheng got things started with a layup and jumper to go along with four free-throws from Gray to take a six-point lead with only 1:37 to play.

-The Cougars came back within three when Gayman powered to the basket for two and knocked down a free-throw with just 23 seconds on the clock.

- Senior Corey Fitz (Los Altos, Calif.) and O'Connor hit two free-throws a piece for the ultimate 97-92 victory.


-Pisacreta led all players with 27 points on the night to go along with a game high four steals. Gayman added 16 points to go along with a game high nine assists.

-O'Connor led the Lions with 26 points while Gray posted a double-double with 25 points and 14 rebounds in the victory. Sheng and Fitz also added 17 points each to help lead Emerson over the Cougars.

- Emerson shot 53.2% (33 for 62) from the field while Clark shot 48.6% (35 for 72).

-The Lions edged the Cougars in rebounds, 38-28.

-The Cougars forced 18 Emerson turnovers and added 25 points off of those turnovers. Clark turned the ball over 14 times and Emerson added 14 points from those errors.


-Clark hosts Coast Guard Academy on Saturday, February 10th for a conference game at 3:00 p.m.

-Emerson travels to WPI on Saturday, February 10th for a NEWMAC matchup at 2:00 p.m.
