Beavers Break Down Clark in NEWMAC Action

-The Lead: The Clark University men's basketball team dropped to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opponent, Babson College on Saturday afternoon. Junior Luca McCormick (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) led all scorers with 19 points in the setback.


First Half

-The Cougars took the first lead of the game on a three-pointer from John Pisacreta (Andover, Mass.) and a good free-throw from Biko Gayman (Fort Pierce, Fla.) gave the visitors the 4-0 lead with just over a minute off the clock.

-Babson quickly cut the deficit to one on a three-pointer from Brandon Johnson (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) at the 18:03 mark.

-Adam Converse (Woodstock, Conn.) added seven points in under a minute from a couple layups and a basket from behind the arc to extend Clark's lead back to four, 13-9 with 14:11 on the clock.

-A 4-1 run capped off by another layup from Converse gave the Cougars their largest lead of the game, 21-14 at the 11:03 mark. The Beavers closed the gap back to one when Jack Collahan (Newton, Penn.) knocked down a three and the hosts took their first lead with 8:42 to play when Frank Oftring (North Attleboro, Mass.) made his way under the basket for two, 24-23.

-McCormick hit a jumper with 3:48 to play to tie the score up 28-28. The held saw two more ties but the Beavers held onto their lead heading into the halftime break with the 38-35 advantage.

Second Half

-The Beavers started scoring in the second half when they hit back-to-back layups for the seven point lead and forced Clark to call a timeout. Johnson extended their run to 3-0 with a three-pointer for the 10-point lead with 16:10 to play.

-McCormick came up with a steal and a basket from behind the arc to close the gap back to six, 47-41, with 14:38 to place. Back to back jumpers from Converse and back to back layups from Tyler Davern (Webster, Mass.) brought the Cougars back within two points with 10 minutes to go in the game, 51-49.

-Julian Alexis (Somerville N.J.) scored five straight points and Coolahan and Oftring followed with back-to-back triples to push Babson's lead back to 62-52 just over two minutes later. McCormick cut the Cougars' deficit to eight with 5:09 left, but three-pointers by Oftring and Alexis, and a layup by senior Brian Kelley (Potomac, Md.) made it 74-58 with 4:05 remaining. The Beavers finished the game on a 3-1 run for the ultimate 80-67 victory.


-Senior Nick Comenale (New York Mills, N.Y.) and Johnson chipped in with 13 points apiece, while Alexis came off the bench to score a career-high 11 points, all in the second half for the Beavers.

-McCormick led all scorers with 19 points,  Converse posted 15 points, and Gayman logged 14 points and eight assists for the Cougars.

- The Beavers shot 58.6 percent overall (17-of-29) in the second half and were 7-of-14 from distance over the final 20 minutes.


-Both teams return to action on Wednesday as Babson hosts WPI at 8 p.m., while Clark travels to Emerson at 7 p.m.
