-The Lead: The Clark University men's basketball team fell to the Gulls of Endicott College in the final game of the Salem State Tournament on Saturday evening. Keith Brown (Pelham, N.H.) led all players with 34 points on the night while Clark's Luca McCormick (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) posted a team high 19 points and eight rebounds in the setback.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Brown recorded 22 points in the first half to give the Gulls a 55-43 lead at halftime.
-McComick and Adam Converse (Woodstock, Conn.) each tallied 10 points in the first half for the Cougars.
-The two teams were tied at the 19:19 mark (3-3) and 16:11 mark (11-11) but Clark never held a lead. A three-pointer from Brown gave the Gulls a 13 point lead, 50-37, with 2:06 to play before the break. Vinny Clifford (Danvers, Mass.) knocked one down from behind the arc to give Endicott their largest lead of the first half, 55-41, with just 21 seconds to play.
-Layups from freshmen Tyler Davern (Webster, Mass.) and Biko Gayman (Fort Pierce, Fla.) brought the Cougars back within 11 points at the start of the second half (58-47) and a three-pointer from senior John Pisacreta (Andover, Mass.) closed the gap to 10 points at the 17:08 mark (63-53).
-A 5-0 run from the Gulls put them back up by 17 points with 13:19 on the clock. The Cougars fought back with back-to-back three-pointers from Anthony Grzembski (Webster, Mass.) and McCormick to go along with a layup from Gayman to bring the score to 75-65 with 10:15 to play.
-A three-pointer from freshman Patrick Bugler (Marblehead, Mass.) at the 7:13 mark brought Clark back within just seven points of the Gulls but this was as close as they would come as Endicott took the final 93-80 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- McCormick guided Clark offensively with 19 points (7-15 FG, 3-8 3PT, 2-3 FT).
-Gayman chipped in with 17 points (7-17 FG, 1-3 3PT, 2-2 FT), while Pisacreta had 13 points.
-Converse and Bugler added 10 points each off the bench.
-Brown was named Endicott's Team MVP for the Salem State Holiday Tournament.
-Brown recorded his third 30-plus point game of the season (45, 38, 34).
-Joe Shehadi (Dorset, Vt.) dished out a game-high and career-high seven assists.
-Endicott led by as many as 18 with 12:22 remaining in the matchup.
-The Gulls held a 38-34 advantage in points in the paint, and a 43-37 differential on the boards
-Clark hosts Wheaton College (Mass.) in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference game on Wednesday, January 3 at 11:00 a.m.
