Cougars Capture Title Behind Alexander, MVP Vayda

Springfield, Mass. - Behind a quartet of players in double figures, Clark University captured the inaugural Golden Bears Hoop Classic with a 74-64 victory over Mount Saint Mary (N.Y.) at Western New England College's Alumni Healthful Living Center.

Senior Mark Alexander (Providence, R.I.) paced the Cougars with 21 points, five rebounds, four assists, and three steals while senior Jack Minister (Manchester, England), and sophomore forwards Mitch Renshaw (Rutland, Mass.) and Brian Vayda (Sturbridge, Mass.) all added 12 points. Vayda, the Tournament MVP, also pulled down nine rebounds and added two steals.

In addition to Vayda, Alexander was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Clark trailed 37-34 at halftime, but came back in the second half and clinched the game with a game-sealing 21-8 run that was capped by a Vayda steal and Alexander finish with 5:42 left.

The Cougars led by as many as 15 points down the stretch in winning for the third time in four outings this season.

Mount Saint Mary (1-3) received 17 points and seven rebounds from sophomore forward Carlos Valdez and 11 points from junior forward Tim Morris.

Clark will play its final game before the Thanksgiving break on Tuesday with a 5:30 p.m. tip against Anna Maria.
