-The Lead: The Clark University field hockey team fell to the Lyons of Wheaton College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday afternoon. After the Lyons scored the first three goals of the game the Cougars rallied for two goals in the second half but the hosts ultimately came out on top.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Just under 10 minutes into the first half Wheaton got on the board when junior Lauren Bartlett (Middlebury. Vt.) intercepted a clear attempt by the Cougars and dribbled around freshman goalkeeper, Grace Sawyer (Windham, Maine) for the 1-0 lead.
-10 minutes later the Lyons added another tally; this time it was senior Michelle Connolly (Stoughton, Mass.) who deflected the ball into the net on a shot that was initially saved by Sawyer. The hosts carried the 2-0 lead into the halftime break.
-Just 42 seconds into the second half Wheaton put their third goal on the board. Connolly received a pass from Hannah LeClair (Wilton, Maine), took Sawyer one on one, and snuck it in on the left post.
-The Cougars came charging back at the 25 minute mark. After a pair of shots were saved by Wheaton goalkeeper, Greta Rielly (Manchester, N.H.), Clark was awarded a penalty stroke. Senior Olivia Barksdale (Fort Washington, Md.) stepped up for the shot and found space behind Morgan Karnes (Durham, Maine) to get the Cougars on the board, 3-1.
-With 10 minutes remaining in the half Clark was able to come together for another goal when Barksdale capitalized on a corner play (3-2).
-Wheaton's defense was able to hold off the Cougars for the remaining 10 minutes of play and took the 3-2 NEWMAC victory.
