Field Hockey Falls in Overtime Battle with Blazers

THE BASICS

-Score: Elms College 4, Clark University 3 - OT

-Records: Clark (4-2), Elms (2-5)

-Location: Leary Field (Chicopee, Mass.)

-The Lead: The Clark University field hockey team fell in a closely contested match with non-conference opponent, Elms College on Tuesday evening. The Elms Blazers walked away with a 4-3 victory late in overtime.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-The Blazers got on the board first with a tally from freshman Ellie Serra (Palmer, Mass.) just over two and a half minutes into the game. After the early goal the game slowed down a bit until about five minutes left in the first half when the Cougars evened the game with a penalty stroke goal that was netted by senior Olivia Barksdale (Fort Washington, Md.). The tie however was short lived as the Blazers answered back in the 35th minute off of a goal from sophomore Carissa Ramirez (San Diego, Calif.) to give the hosts the 2-1 advantage heading into halftime.

-Six minutes into the second half the Blazers struck again with an unassisted goal from senior Jeszenia McGuire (Brimfield,Mass.) (3-1).

-The Cougars continued to keep the pressure on, as they would eventually score two goals and even things a three before the end of regulation. Sophomore Cheyanne Zappala (Laconia, N.H.) found her classmate Chase Collier (Lisbon, Maine) who netted the Cougar's second goal of the game before Collier assisted on another goal by Barksdale who evened the game at 3-3.

 -The Blazers were able to cap off a hard fought victory with a late overtime goal by McGuire.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

-The Elms offense was powered by McGuire who had two goals, and Serra and Ramirez who each had one goal and an assist.

-The Cougars offense was led by Barksdale who had nine shots and two goals. Collier also notched a goal and an assist.

-The Cougars abused the net with an overwhelming 26 shots while the Blazers Made their shots count as they only had six total, with four finding the back of the net.

- The Clark Cougars will host Johnson and Whales, on Thursday September 20th at 7:00 p.m.

-The Blazers next game will be at Rivier, on the same day.
