-The Lead: Fueled by four first-half goals, the Springfield College field hockey team cruised to a 4-2 win over Clark University in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Tuesday evening at Stagg Field. In the victory, senior midfielder Ann Mahoney (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) notched a career-best four points on a goal and two assists, while Maggie Kennedy (Clay, N.Y.) registered a pair of goals to push her season total to 15.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Springfield College got on the board just 6:45 into the contest when Mahoney took a shot from the top of the arch, which was deflected by the stick of a Clark defender before the ball trickled between the legs of Michaud to give the Pride an early 1-0 lead.
-Just 9:11 later, Springfield College pushed its advantage to a pair when Mahoney retrieved a penalty corner that went to long before sending a pass down to Belle Copponi (Dover, Mass.), who slid a pass across the crease to a wide open Amanda Nusbaum (Conway, N.H.), who blasted a shot into the back of the goal to make it 2-0 with 19:04 to play in the half.
-Springfield College took a 3-0 lead just 2:25 later when Kennedy picked up her first of the game when Mahoney knocked a loose ball through her defenders legs, before Kennedy fired from long range, finding the back of the net to make it 3-0, Pride, with 16:39 to play in the half. The maroon and white closed out its first-half scoring when Dani Sweet (Charlton, Mass.) carried the ball towards the middle of the goal mouth before getting tied up with a defender, but Kennedy continued the drive and found the back of the net to make it 4-0, Pride, heading into the halftime break.
-Clark finally broke through with 8:06 to play in the game, as Cheyanne Zappala (Laconia, N.H.) notched an unassisted strike to make it 4-1, Pride, before the freshman midfielder helped set up Anna Joyce (Hopkinton, Mass.) with 5:48 to play, as Zappala took a feed off of a penalty corner and fired one on cage, which was redirected into the back of the net by Joyce to make it 4-2, Springfield College, in the late stages of the game. The Pride was able to fend off the rally from Clark, sealing the 4-2 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-In net for Springfield College, Emmalie Drake (Pittsford, N.Y.) made a pair of saves in the victory, while for Clark, Dani Michaud (Providence, R.I.) and Katie Crowley (Bolton, Mass.) split halves and combined for eight stops in the setback.
-Springfield College held a 22-11 shot advantage over 70 minutes of play, while it was also awarded nine penalty corners compared to the Cougars' two.
