The Lead: The Cougars of Clark University downed the Lyons of Wheaton College 1-0 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
-The Cougars notched the loan goal of the game as the Lyons were charged with a penalty in the circle with just 10 minutes off the clock in the first half. The penalty sent junior Olivia Barksdale (Fort Washington, M.D.) to the line for a penalty stroke opportunity.
-Barksdale shot to the right side of Lyon's goalkeeper, Riley Thompson. Thompson got a touch on the ball with her stick but Barksdale's shot proved to be too strong and fell into the net for the 1-0 lead.
-The two teams battled it out on each end of the field for the remaining 45 minutes of play, but neither team could capitalize again and the Cougars took the 1-0 NEWMAC victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
-Wheaton outshot Clark 20-19 but the Cougars put 15 shots on goal to the Lyons 14 shots on goal.
-Clark's junior goalkeeper, Dani Michaud (Providence, R.I.) posted an impressive eight saves to help lift the home team to victory.
-Barksdale also recorded three defensive saves in the win for the Cougars.
-Riley Thompson recorded 11 saves in the loss and falls to 2-4 on the season.
-Wheaton held an advantage in penalty corners with nine to the Cougar's six.
-Clark University hosts Elms on Tuesday, Sept. 26th at 6:00 p.m. in non-conference action.
-Wheaton hosts Johnson & Wales on the same day at 7:00 p.m.
