Springfield, Mass. – Springfield freshman Belle Copponi had a hand in all three goals and the host Pride defeated Clark University, 3-0 in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference field hockey action on Tuesday afternoon.
Score: Springfield College 3, Clark University 0
Records: Clark University 5-11 (0-6 NEWMAC); Springfield College 6-8 (2-4 NEWMAC)
Location: Stagg Field, Springfield, Mass.
How It Happened:
Springfield got on the board with 17:43 remaining in the first half when Maggie Kennedy (Clay, N.Y.) took a shot on net, that was blocked, but the rebound bounced right to the stick of Copponi, who finished her chance to make it 1-0.
Springfield College pushed its lead to a pair just 1:33 into the second half when Copponi gained control of the ball on the outside of the arch and slid a pass over to Emily Knobel (North Attleboro, Mass.) for an easy finish to make it 2-0 with 33:27 left to play.
The hosts capped the scoring when Copponi picked up a loose ball at midfield, carrying it into the Cougars' defensive end. After drawing a defender, she slid a pass to Kennedy, who turned and fired for her second goal of the afternoon.
Inside The Numbers:
The Pride held a 25-12 shot advantage over 70 minutes of play, while also holding a 10-5 margin in penalty corners. Dani Michaud (Providence, R.I.) posted eight saves in the setback for the Scarlet and White – her fourth game this season with eight stops or more.
