Leicester, Mass. – Clark University returned to the win column with a 3-1 win over Worcester-area rival Becker College in non-league field hockey action on Thursday afternoon.
Score: Clark University 3, Becker College 1
Records: Clark University 5-4; Becker College 0-10
Location: Alumni Field, Leicester, Mass.
How It Happened:
Clark jumped on the scoreboard in the game's sixth minute when Olivia Barksdale (Fort Washington, Md.) connected with Lauren Mackey (Dublin, N.H.) for her sixth tally of the year at 5:41.
The Scarlet and White doubled their advantage a little less than 20 minutes later when Barksdale registered an unassisted marker at 24:01 when her shot was redirected off a Becker defender into the back of the net.
It looked as if the host Hawks would go into the half down by two goals but Becker sliced the lead in half when Amy Grenier (Westminster, Mass.) setup up Jocelyn Lebel (Grafton, Mass.) for Lebel's tenth career score with less than two minutes to go before halftime.
Just as they did in the first half, the Cougars wasted little time getting on the board to open the second half as Mackey fed Barksdale near the left post for her second goal of the afternoon.
Dani Michaud (Providence, R.I.) earned the victory for Clark without making a save. Becker goalie Elysabeth Jefferies (Lisbon Falls, Maine) turned away nine shots in the loss.
"Today was a great team effort," said Clark head coach Callie Lekas. "Everyone worked for 70 minutes and connected well. Our ball movement was the difference maker today. It's great to head into our next NEWMAC game with a win and knowing what we want to work on before then."
Clark will continue league play on Saturday when they travel to NEWMAC rival Mount Holyoke at 1:00 p.m.
