Northampton, Mass. - Freshman Mel
Melkonian (Worcester, Mass.) scored four goals and added
an assist for a nine-point night as visiting Clark rebounded from
their first NEWMAC loss of the season on Saturday with a convincing
7-1 win over Smith in a game played at Holyoke High School on
Monday evening.
In addition to Melkonian, Lauren Blake (Oakland,
Maine) had two goals and an assist as the Cougars improved to 6-4
overall and 3-1 in league play.
Melkonian put Clark on the board a little more than 11 minutes into
the match with an unassisted tally. Moments later, she set up Blake
for her first score and a 2-0 lead for the Cougars.
Clark's third goal came courtesy of Melkonian, again of the
unassisted variety. Smith finally got on the board at the 28:44
mark when Rebecca Capute beat Kathryn Dawsey
(Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) on a penalty corner, making the score 3-1
at halftime.
The Cougars went back on the attack less than two minutes into the
second half when Katherine Rowe (Fort Myer, Va.)
rattled the back of the cage with help from Meghan Lennon (Charlton, Mass.) for a 4-1 Clark advantage.
Blake helped Melkonian score her third goal of the game less than
two minutes later and then Blake scored her second on an assist
from Madeleine Lutts (Salem, Mass.) moments after
that.
Melkonian wrapped her big night with her fourth and final score at
54:51, giving the Cougars their season-high seventh goal.
Dawsey sent back six shots to earn the win for Clark, who will now
play four of its final five games at home beginning with Saturday's
matchup with Wheaton.
