Anchormen Slip Past Cougars in Non-Conference Match-Up

THE BASICS

-Score: Rhode Island College 8, Clark University 5

-Records: Clark (14-20), Rhode Island College (23-11)

-Location: Worcester, Mass. (Granger Field)

-The Lead: The Clark University baseball team fell to the Anchormen of Rhode Island College in a non-conference match-up at Granger Field on Thursday afternoon. The victory lifts RIC to 23-11 on the season while the Cougars fall to 14-20 overall.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-The Anchormen took an early lead with a run in the top of the first when senior Tyler Walsh (Cumberland, R.I.)  singled to left center to score sophomore Joseph Coro (North Providence, R.I.) (1-0).

-Coro kicked off the top of the third with a double down the left field line before junior Ryan Rotondo (Warwick, R.I.) used a sacrifice fly to left field to score him for the 2-0 advantage.

-Clark got a run back in the bottom of the third to close the gap to 2-1. Junior Rudy Sarro (New Fairfield, Conn.) started things off with a single to center field before his classmate Dylan Horn (Sterling, Conn.) moved him to second with a bunt down the third base line and Collin Porter (Brookfield, Conn.) brought him home with a sacrifice fly to left field (2-1).

-Junior Sam Franco (Cranston, R.I.) led off with a homerun in the top of the fourth to put the Anchormen back up by two but the Cougars responded with a run in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single from Sarro that scored senior Zach Kelley (Hadley, Mass.) (3-2).

-After two scoreless innings RIC used five runs on five hits in the top of the seventh to pull ahead, 8-2. Junior Rommy Morel (Providence, R.I.) used a double to left field to earn three RBI in the inning.

-The Cougars responded in the bottom of the seventh with back-to-back solo homers from Porter and sophomore Chris Radovic (Fairfield, Conn.) to pull the hosts within four, 8-4. Junior Ryan Ruhlin (Portland, Maine) got one more run across home when he singled through the left side to score sophomore James Huber (Rochester, N.Y.) and the Cougars trailed by just three.

-RIC held on defensively through the eighth and the ninth to claim the 8-5 final victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

-Porter finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored for the Cougars. Sarro also went 2-for-4 and added one RBI and on run scored. Ruhlin finished 3-for-4 at the plate with one RBI.

-Franco went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two run scored for the Anchormen. Walsh finished 4-for-5 with one RBI and one run scored and Morel finished 1-for-4 with three RBI in the victory.

-Senior Dan Shaw (Arlington, Mass.) falls to 0-6 on the season for the Cougars. He went 5.2 innings, struck out two batters, and allowed nine hits and three runs scored in the setback.

-Junior Tyler Shemick (Foster, R.I.) improves to 4-1 on the mound for RIC. He went 6.1 innings, struck out seven batters, and allowed 11 hits and five runs scored in the victory. Junior Jake Rockefeller (Cumberland, R.I.) grabbed his third save of the season in one inning pitched.

-Clark hosts Coast Guard Academy on Saturday, April 27th for Senior Day and a NEWMAC doubleheader starting at 11:00 AM.

-RIC is back at home on Saturday when they host UMass-Boston in a Little East Conference doubleheader starting at noon.
