Sixth Inning Rally Lifts Lancers Over Clark

THE BASICS

-The Lead: The Lancers of Worcester State University exploded for nine runs in the top of the sixth inning to propel them to a 10-8 final victory over the Clark University baseball team on Wednesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Worcester State took the first lead of the game with a run in the top of the second inning. Senior Michael Ferrara (Easton, Mass.) led off with a double to left field and scored on a double to left center from his classmate Seth Leslie (Phillipston, Mass.) for the 1-0 lead.

-The Cougars responded with two runs in the bottom of the second. Junior Jackson Posnik (Wellesley, Mass.) reached on a fielder's choice and his classmates Rudy Sarro (New Fairfield, Conn.) and Ryan Ruhlin (Portland, Maine) both walked to load the bases. With two outs junior Dylan Horn (Sterling, Conn.) sent a two RBI single through the right side to score Sarro and Ruhlin for the 2-1 lead.

-After retiring the first three batters in the top of the third, Clark put up two more runs in the bottom of the inning. Junior Derek Lefebvre (Groton, Mass.) earned an RBI with a single to deep right field that scored junior Kyle Shaw (Litchfield, N.H.) from second. Lefebvre later came home on a wild pitch for the 4-1 advantage.

-Sarro singled up the middle in the bottom of the fourth, stole second and third, and ultimately came home on an RBI single to right field from Horn for the 5-1 lead. With a 2-2 count sophomore Chris Radovic (Fairfield, Conn.) lined the ball into right field to score Horn to give the Cougars the five-run lead (6-1).

-The Lancers rallied for nine runs in the top of the sixth including a grand slam from first year Andrew Miller (Naples, Fla.) to pull ahead by four, 10-6.

-The Cougars got one run back in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI double to center field from sophomore James Huber (Rochester, N.Y.) that scored Radovic to pull within three (10-7). Radovic added his second RBI of the game when he singled to right center in the bottom of the eighth to score Sarro and bring the Cougars within two (10-8). The Lancer's defense retired the first three Clark batters in the bottom of the ninth to clinch the 10-8 final victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBER

-Horn finished 3-for-5 at the plate for the Cougars, with three RBI and one run scored. Radovic went 3-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored in the setback. Clark finished with 10 hits on the day.

-Miller led the Lancers at the plate with a 2-for-5 day including a homerun, four RBI, and two runs scored. Leslie finished 2-for-5 with two RBI while Worcester State put up a total of 14 hits in the victory.

-Sophomore Torsten Sloan Anderson (Shelburne Falls, Mass.) pitched 5.1 innings for the Cougars, struck out three batters, and allowed five runs scored (three earned). He falls to 0-1 on the season.

-Senior Josh Boucher earned the win on the mound for Worcester State and improves to 1-2 on the season. He pitched 4.1 innings, struck out three batters, allowed six hits and three runs scored. Freshman Aidan Abernathy (Methuen, Mass.) tallied his third save of the year for the Lancers.
