Baseball Splits with Springfield in NEWMAC Doubleheader

-The Lead: The Clark University baseball team split in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader with the Pride of Springfield College today. Clark fell 6-3 in game one before rallying for 15 hits and 11 runs in an 11-6 final victory in game two.


Game One: Springfield 6, Clark 3

-Springfield hopped out to an early lead putting up four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Graduate student Mark Joao (Wappingers Falls, N.H.) tripled to right center for two RBI when sophomore Jack Cooney (Pittsfield, Mass.) and senior Brandon Russo (Lisbon, Conn.) came home (2-0). Joao scored on a wild pitch and sophomore Eduardo Martinez (Southwick, Mass.) earned an RBI when his ground out to third scored Gleason (4-0).

-The Pride added one run in the bottom of the third on an RBI single through the left side from junior Ryan Smith (Millis, Mass.) that scored sophomore Jason Bean (Middleboro, Mass.) and one more run in the bottom of the fifth extended their lead to 6-0.

-Clark got on the board in the top of the sixth when sophomore Steven Mooney (Buffalo, N.Y.) started things up with a bunt. Junior Dylan Horn (Sterling, Conn.) moved him to second with a single to right field, and the Cougar's loaded the bases with a bunt from junior Collin Porter (Brookfield, Conn.). Sophomore Chris Radovic (Fairfield, Conn.) earned the RBI when his single through the left side sent Mooney home (6-1).

-The Cougars added two more runs in the top of the eighth with an RBI double down the left field line from Radovic and a sacrifice fly from junior Derek Lefebvre (Groton, Mass.) that scored Horn to bring Clark within three (6-3). The Pride's defense held on through the final inning to capture the 6-3 final victory.

-Radovic led Clark at the plate going 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

-First year Jafar Vohra (Shelton, Conn.) falls to 1-2 on the season as he pitched four innings for Clark and struck out three batters.

-Senior Brian Johnson (East Haddam, Conn.) earned the victory on the mound for Springfield going all nine innings, striking out 12 batters, allowing seven hits and three runs scored. He improves to 2-1 on the season.

Game Two: Clark 11, Springfield 6

-Clark put up five runs over the first three innings to take an early 5-0 lead. In the top of the second junior Nick Jordan (Seaford, N.Y.) singled up the middle to score Andrew Thibault (Nashua, N.H.) for the 1-0 lead. Lefebvre singled through the left side in the top of the third to score Horn and senior Zach Kelley (Hadley, Mass.) earned three RBI with a triple to deep center field to put the Cougars up 5-0.

-The Pride got three runs back in the bottom of the fourth to pull within two (5-3) before the Cougars added one more runs in top of the fifth when Thibault came home on a fielder's choice (6-3). Clark pulled ahead by seven in the top of the seventh with RBIs from Jordan, junior Ryan Ruhlin (Portland, Maine), and Horn (10-3).

-Springfield responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the seventh but Clark put up two runs in the top of the ninth to clinch the 11-6 final victory. Lefebvre and Thibault each earned a RBI in the final inning with runs scored by Horn and Porter.

-Horn led Clark at the plate in game two going 5-for-6 with one RBI and two runs scored.

-Senior Cal Slepkow (Rehoboth, Mass.) earned the win in 3.1 innings on the mound for Clark and improves to 6-2 on the season.


-Clark travels to Emerson College on Tuesday, April 16th for a NEWMAC contest at 3:30 p.m.

-Springfield travels to NEWMAC opponent, Babson College on the same day for nine-innings starting at 3:30 p.m.
