-The Lead: Clark University stranded seven runners through the first three innings and seven Eastern Connecticut State University pitchers combined on a nine-hitter with nine strikeouts to carry the Warriors to a 6-3 non-conference win in the first meeting ever between the programs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Warriors got things rolling in the bottom of the second inning with a two-RBI double to center field by first year Owen Marica (Haddam, Conn.). Junior Jake LeFevre (Mansfield Center, Conn.) and senior William Coleman (Northford, Conn.) crossed home on the play for the early 2-0 lead
-The Cougars got one back in the top of the third inning. Junior Andrew Thibault (Nashua, N.H.) led off with a single to center field and a double by his classmate Collin Porter (Brookfield, Conn.) sent him home, 2-1.
-Eastern Conn. pulled ahead by two in the bottom of the third when sophomore Luke Broadhurst (Stafford, Conn.) doubled to center with two outs on the board to score senior Ryan Hood (Arlington, Mass.) (3-1).
-After a 1-2-3 defensive inning, the hosts extended their lead to three in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs on the board Marica singled to left field, moved to third on a long single to center by sophomore Jack Rich (Meriden, Conn.), and came home on a wild pitch (4-1).
-The Warriors added another run in the bottom of the sixth when Rich sent an RBI single to right field to score LeFevre for the 5-1 advantage.
-Junior Dylan Horn (Sterling, Conn.) led off in the top of the seventh with a single to center field and moved into scoring position on a failed pickoff attempt. Horn stole third and came home on a wild pitch to bring the Cougars within three (5-2).
-Eastern Connecticut extended their lead back to four in the bottom of the eighth when senior Alexander White (West Hartford, Conn.) scored on a sacrifice fly to center by LeFevre (4-2).
-Clark rallied for one more run the top of the nineth as junior Rudy Sarro (New Fairfield, Conn.) led off with a double to left field and his classmate Kyle Shaw (Litchfield, N.H.) walked to put two runners on base with no outs. After a pitching change by the Warriors Horn singled to right field to score Sarro and bring Clark within three. Eastern Connecticut clinched three outs, leaving one runner on base, to take the final 6-3 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Horn led Clark at the plate going 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored.
-Marica led the Warriors offensively as he finished 2-for-2 with two RBIs and one run scored.
-The Warriors put up 10 hits on the day while the Cougars finished with nine hits.
-First year Jacob Pullen (Sudbury, Mass.) took the loss on the mound for Clark and falls to 1-2 on the season. He pitched the opening five innings of the game and struck out two batters.
-Senior Cole Ogorzalek (Portland, Conn.) earned the win on the mound for the Warriors going 2.2 innings and striking out two batters. He moves to 1-0 this season.
-Clark hosts WPI tomorrow, Friday, April 5th, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action at 3:30 p.m. They will then travel to the Engineer's on Saturday for a doubleheaders starting at 12:00 p.m.
-Eastern Connecticut hosts Southern Maine in a Little East Conference doubleheader on Saturday, April 6th starting at 12:00 p.m.
