Cougars Fall in NEWMAC Doubleheader with Wheaton

THE BASICS

-Score Game One: Wheaton College 3, Clark University 2

-Score Game Two: Wheaton College 3, Clark University 2

-Records: Clark (8-10, NEWMAC 0-3), Wheaton (12-4, NEWMAC 4-0)

-Location: Worcester, Mass. (Granger Field)

-The Lead: The Clark University baseball team dropped in a pair of NEWMAC games with the Lyons of Wheaton College on Saturday afternoon. The Lyons secured a one-run victory in both games, 3-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game One: Wheaton 3, Clark 2

-Clark put the first run of the day on the board in the bottom of the second inning. Junior Collin Porter (Brookfield, Conn.) doubled down the left field line to start things off and his classmate Nick Jordan (Seaford, N.Y.) sent him home with a two-out single to center field for the 1-0 lead.

-Senior Jared Sharkey (West Bridgewater, Mass.) led off with a homerun in the top of the fourth to tie the game, 1-1.

-Clark regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth when junior Andrew Thibault (Nashua, N.H.) led off with a single to third and got in scoring position on a fielding error by the Lyons. Junior Dylan Horn (Sterling, Conn.) earned an RBI when his single scored Thibault for the 2-1 lead.

-A homer from first year Jacob Studley (Barrington, R.I.) in the top of the sixth tied the game again, 2-2, and a sacrifice fly from Sharkey scored the winning run when junior Nick Raposo (Barrington, R.I.) crossed home (3-2).

-Horn led the Cougars going 2-for-4 with one RBI.

-Sharkey finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs and one run scored while Raposo finished 2-for-3 for Wheaton.

-Senior Cal Slepkow (Rehoboth, Mass.) took the loss on the mound for Clark and falls to 3-2 on the season. He struck out five batters over eight innings.

-Sophomore Paul Pru (Dennis, Mass.) earned the victory for the Lyons and improves to 3-0 on the season. He pitched five innings and struck out seven batters.

Game Two: Wheaton 3, Clark 2

-After six scoreless innings the Lyons came alive in the top of the seventh. First year Andrew Manni (Middleton, Mass.) kicked things off with a triple to right center and sophomore George Mulcahey (Brooklyn, N.Y.) singled up the middle to score him for the 1-0 lead.

-A two-RBI single by Manni in the top of the eighth extended Wheaton's lead to 3-0.

-Clark rallied back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI single from Porter and Horn came home on a wild pitch. The Lyons were able to hold on through the ninth for the 3-2 final victory.

-Porter led Clark going 1-for-4 with one RBI while junior Derek Lefebvre (Groton, Mass.) finished 2-for-4.

-Manni led the Lyons going 2-for-5 with two RBIs and one run scored.

-Sophomore Nick Guarino (New Haven, Conn.) pitched seven innings for the Cougars, allowed seven hits, three runs scored, and struck out two batters. He falls to 1-2 on the season.

-Freshman Griffin Young (Dover, N.H.) earned the victory on the mound for Wheaton going 7.2 innings, allowing five hits, one run scored, and striking out eight batters. He improves to 3-0 on the season.

UP NEXT

-Clark is back at home on Tuesday, April 2nd when they host MIT in NEWMAC action at 3:30 p.m.

-The Lyons return to action on Sunday, March 31 for an 11 a.m. non-conference contest against Eastern Connecticut State at Sidell Stadium
