THE BASICS

-The Lead: The Clark University baseball team split in two games with the Judges of Brandeis University in their first home games of the season on Saturday afternoon. They started the day cruising to a 20-3 victory over the Judges before battling in a 10-3 setback in game two. The Cougars put up a total of six homeruns over the two games with junior Andrew Thibault (Nashua, N.H.) leading the way at the plate in both games. He finished 6-for-10 overall with two homeruns on the day.

Game #1: Clark 20, Brandeis 3

HOW IT HAPPENED
-After the Judges put up a run in the top of the first, the Cougars rallied eight runs in the bottom of the inning from five hits. Thibault led off with single up the middle and a trio of walks put him across home for the first run of the game. After sophomore Chris Radovic (Fairfield, Conn.) came home on a passed ball, junior Nick Jordan (Seaford, N.Y.) singled up the middle to score senior Zach Kelley (Hadley, Mass.) for the 3-1 lead. Sophomore Steven Mooney (Buffalo, N.Y.) cranked a grand slam over the left field fence for four more runs and the 7-1 advantage. Thibault crossed home after his second at bat of the inning to give Clark the 8-1 lead heading into the second inning.

-After a 1-2-3 defensive inning, the Cougars put up five more runs on two hits in the bottom of the second. Jordan earned two RBIs with a double to left center, Mooney sent first year Andrea Cabianca (Yonkers, N.Y.) home, and junior Dylan Horn (Sterling, Conn.) scored Jordan (12-1). Thibault homered to left field for one last run in the second, giving Clark the 13-1 advantage.

-The Cougars put the first three batters down in the third and added three more hits and three more runs in the bottom of the inning. Casabianca put a three-run homer over the fence to extend Clark's lead to 16-1.

-After Clark added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth the Judges added a run in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single to right field from sophomore Nick Yanko (Rutland, Mass.) that scored first year Liam Kennedy (Norwell, Mass.) (18-2).

-Sophomore Mike Khoury (East Bridgewater, Mass.) homered for the Judges in the top of the sixth and Clark responded with a homerun of their own from junior Kyle Shaw (Litchfield, N.H.) in the bottom of the inning to claim the 20-3 final victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

-The Cougars finished game one with a total of 15 hits including five homeruns while the Judges put up six.

-Thibault led Clark at the plate with a 4-for-5 day, two RBIs, and four runs scored. Jordan finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored while Mooney finished with five RBIs and Casabianca finished with three.

-Khoury led Brandeis going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

-Senior Cal Slepkow (Rehoboth, Mass.) earned the win on the mound for Clark going six innings and striking out three batters. He improves to 3-0 on the season.

-Junior Tim Lopez (Brooklyn, N.Y.) took the loss on the mound for Brandeis and falls to 0-1 this season. He pitched 1.2 innings, struck out three batters, allowed seven hits and 13 runs scored (11 earned).

Game #2: Brandeis 10, Clark 3

HOW IT HAPPENED

 -Brandeis took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Victor Oppenheimer came home on a falied pick-off attempt at third and Khoury scored when Luke Hall sent an RBI double to left field.

-The Cougars got one back in the bottom of the second inning when Horn hit a sacrifice fly ball to centerfield to score Casabianca (2-1).

-The Judges extended their lead to 5-1 in the top of the fourth with an RBI single up the middle from C Sheehan and two RBIs from Oppenheim on his single to left field. Clark fought back within two when Thibault homered for the second time of the day, this time straight over the center field fence, and Horn crossed home with him (5-3).

-Five runs in the top of the fifth on a grand slam from Khoury sealed the deal for Brandeis as they came out with the 10-3 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

-Thibault led Clark going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and one run scored. Radovic finished 2-for-4 and Horn finished 1-for-2 with an RBI.

-Khoury finished 1-for-3 with four RBIs and two runs scored for the Judges. Oppenheimer went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored, and Hall wrapped up game two 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

-After pitching 5.2 innings for the Cougars, sophomore Nick Guarino (New Haven, Conn.) falls to 1-1 on the season. He struck out five batters in the outing.

-Junior Albert Guttierez (Miami, Fla.) improves to 2-0 this season, earning the win on the mound for Brandeis. He pitched six innings, allowed seven hits, three runs scored, and struck out six batters.

-Brandeis collected 10 hits in game two in their 32 at bats. Clark finished with eight hits in 29 at bats.

-Clark takes on Saint Joseph's College (Maine) on Sunday, March 17th for a double header starting at 12:00 p.m.

-Brandeis hosts Wentworth tomorrow, Sunday March 17th, at the New England Baseball Complex for two games starting at 2:00 p.m.
