-The Lead: The Clark University baseball team fell to the Lyons of Wheaton College in game number six of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tournament at Babson College on Saturday afternoon. The Cougars wrap up their season with a 26-13 overall record and 12-5 record in the conference while Wheaton moves on to the championship game with Babson on Sunday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Wheaton took the first lead of the game with three runs scored in the top of the third inning. Junior Jimmy Gianquitti (North Scituate, R.I.) led off with a single to left center field. Senior Matt Cook (Harwich, Mass.) bunted and Clark was able to get the lead runner out at second but a triple to Chris Ruocco (Lexington, Mass.) scored Cook for the 1-0 lead. A ground out to short stop from Nick Raposo (Johnston, R.I.) scored Ruocco (2-0) and a singled to center from Bryant Salkind (Rochester, Mass.) scored him for the 3-0 lead.
-The Cougars added a run in the bottom of the third when sophomore Ryan Ruhlin (Portland, Maine) homered over the right center field fence (3-1).
-Clark tied it up with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Nick Jordan (Seaford, N.Y.) doubled down the left field line to get himself in scoring positions and Andrew Thibault (Nashua, N.H.) followed up with a double of his own and an RBI (3-2). Ruhlin reach on an error by Wheaton and Thibault scored to tie the game at three apiece.
-The Cougars gained their first lead of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. Senior Teddy Downing (Cambridge, Mass.) singled to left center to start things off and Derek Lefebvre (Groton, Mass.) put a ball in the same spot to move him to second. Another double from Jordan scored Downing to put Clark ahead 4-3.
-Wheaton quickly regained their lead with two runs scored in the top of the sixth. Junior Jared Sharkey (West Bridgewater, Mass.) started the inning with a single to center and Quinn Krais (Maplewood, N.J.) moved him to third with a hit to deep left center field. A single to center from senior Ryan McKeon (Johnston, R.I.) scored Sharkey and a single to left from Willy Boyd (Orleans, Mass.) scored Krais for the 5-4 lead and final victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Jordan led Clark with a 4-for-4 day at the plate and an RBI. Ruhlin was 2-for-4 with a homerun and an RBI.
-Raposo led Wheaton going 4-for-5 with an RBI in the victory.
-Freshman Sean Savage (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) started the game on the mound for Clark. He pitched 2.1 innings, gave up three runs, and struck out one batter. Freshman Nick Guarino (New Haven, Conn.) pitched 6.2 innings, struck out five batters and allowed two runs scored. He falls to 2-5 innings to close the season.
-Senior Brady Furdon (Natick, Mass.) pitched 4.2 innings for Wheaton and struck out seven batters while giving up three earned runs. His classmate, Jimmy Gowen (Brielle, N.J.) recorded the victory (4-2), coming in to pitch 3.1 innings and striking out two batters.
-Clark wraps up their season with a 26-13 record and a 12-5 record in the NEWMAC.
-Wheaton moves on to play Babson again tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. at Babson.
