-The Lead: The Clark University baseball team (No. 2) fell to the Lyons of Wheaton College (No. 3) in the New England Women's and Men's (NEWMAC) tournament (Game #3) on Friday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Wheaton got on the board first in the top of the third inning. With one out on the board Chris Ruocco (Lexington, Mass.) got on base by a walk and advanced to second on a single to left from Nick Raposo (Johnston, R.I.). Sophomore Bryant Salkind (Rochester, Mass.) loaded the bases with a single to left. Quinn Krais (Maplewood, N.J.) earned an RBI with two outs when his single to left scored Raposo.
-After Clark's starting pitcher, Cal Slepkow (Rehoboth, Mass.) sat two Lyons on swinging strikeouts the vistors rallied for one run in the top of the fourth. A two-out triple from senior Matt Cook (Harwich, Mass.) set up Ruocco for his RBI double for the 2-0 lead.
-Clark put up their first hit in the bottom of the fourth when graduate student Kyle Bonciki (Waterbury, Conn.) found room up the middle. He advanced to second on a passed ball and Zach Kelley (Hadley, Mass.) got on base by a walk, but Ruocco made a clean play at short stop to get the third out and leave Clark with two runners on base to end the fourth.
-Sophomore Andrew Thibault (Nashua, N.H.) got on base in the bottom of the fifth when Wheaton misplayed his hard hit ball to third base. Freshman Chris Radovic (Fairfield, Conn.) roped a double down the left field line to score Thibault and the Cougars trailed by just one run with one out on the board. Wheaton's starting pitcher, freshman Gavin Riely (Bridgewater, Mass.) earned a strikeout for the second out and a ground out wrapped up the inning leaving Radovic at second (2-1).
-In the top of the seventh the Lyons added another run to extend their lead to 3-1. Jared Sharkey (West Bridgewater, Mass.) doubled down the left field line and advanced to third when Kraiss grounded out to shortstop. Sharkey scored when Ryan McKeon (Johnston, R.I.) sacrifice bunted for the ultimate 3-1 victory.
