-The Lead: The Clark University baseball team combined for 20 hits and a five-run sixth inning helped lift them to a non-conference victory over the Seahawks of Salve Regina University on Saturday afternoon. Kyle Bonicki (Waterbury, Conn.) went 4-for-5 at the plate with an RBI while junior Zach Kelley (Hadley, Mass.) chipped in with three RBIs in a 2-for-4 day to lift the Cougars to victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Salve hopped on the board with a run in the bottom of the first when Anthony Cieszko (Woodcliff Lake, N.J.) singled to score John Militano (Miller Place, N.Y.) (1-0).
-Clark responded in the top of the second when Kelley recorded his third homerun of the season to tie the game at 1-1.
-Zack Barlok (Cheshire, Conn.) put the Seahawks back on top with a two-RBI single in the bottom of the fourth and three more RBIs in the bottom of the fifth increased their lead to 7-1.
-Clark rallied five runs in the top of the sixth to close the gap to one run, 7-6. Kelley started the rally with another RBI when he singled to right field to scored Teddy Downing (Cambridge, Mass.) (7-2). A hit from Derek Lefebvre (Groton, Mass.) scored Downing and Nick Jordan (Seaford, N.Y.) recorded a sacrifice fly to center field to score Kelley (7-4). With one out Andrew Thibault (Nashua, N.H.) doubled to center field that crossed Lefebvre and Chris Radovic (Fairfield, Conn.) followed up with a double of his own, this time to left field, and Thibault scored (7-6).
-After three quick outs in the bottom of the sixth, the Cougars took their first lead of the game with two runs in the top of the seventh. Kelley recorded his third RBI when he scored Bonicki and a double from Jordan gave Clark the 8-7 lead.
-Salve was able to add one more run in the bottom of the seventh, but a homerun from Radovic in the eighth and three more runs in the nineth secured the final 12-8 victory for the Cougars.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Kelley led Clark with three RBIs on a 2-for-4 day and Bonicki stayed hot at the plate with a 4-for-5 day and an RBI.
-Militano led the Seahawks going 4-for-5 with three RBIs in the setback.
-Cal Slepkow (Rehoboth, Mass.) went five innings and struck out two batters. Sean Savage (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) saw time on the mound going 1.2 innings with a strikeout and Dan Shaw (Arlington, Mass.) and Downing also made appearances.
-Clark travels across town to Worcester State tomorrow, Sunday April 29th, for a non-conference game at 1:00 p.m.
