Baseball Runs Away with Victory Over Emerson in Fifth Straight Win

-Records: Clark (15-7, NEWMAC 7-2), Emerson (6-15, NEWMAC 1-8)

-The Lead: The Clark University baseball team defeated the Lions of Emerson College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Tuesday afternoon. The Cougars totaled 14 hits including three from senior Teddy Downing (Cambridge, Mass.) and three from graduate student Kyle Bonicki (Waterbury, Conn.) en route to the conference victory.


-Clark put up an early two runs when Bonicki and Downing crossed home in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore Nick Jordan (Seaford, N.Y.) extended their lead to 3-0 when he blasted one over the left field fence in the second.

-Emerson got on the board in the top of the third as a sacrifice fly ball to center from sophomore Joe Paladino (Bedminster, N.J.) scored Beattie (3-1).

-The Cougars added three more runs in the bottom of the third inning. Sophomore Dylan Horn (Sterling, Conn.) got things started with a single through the right side and a hit from Bonicki to right field moved him to second. A balk scored Horn and a sacrifice fly from Junior Zach Kelley (Hadley, Mass.) scored Bonicki (5-1). To close out the inning sophomore Derek Levfebvre (Groton, Mass.) homered down the left field line and Clark took a 6-1 advantage.

-An RBI single from Bonicki scored freshman Steven Mooney (Buffalo, N.Y.) before Horn scored on another balk (8-1). Downing finished the fourth with an RBI single to left field that scored Bonicki (9-1).

-Clark added one more in the fifth when an RBI double to left from Jordan scored Lefebvre.

-Emerson posted their second run in the top of the sixth inning. Freshman Ryan McCahan (San Jose, Calif.) doubled down the left field line and an RBI single from Joe Cuccio (Jefferson, N.J.) through the left side sent McCahan home as the Lions trailed 10-2.

-Jordan added an RBI in the seventh while Downing, Kelley, Lefebvre and sophomore Jake Good (North Falmouth, Mass.)  all added RBIs in the bottom of the eighth as Clark secured the final 15-2 NEWMAC victory.


-Jordan went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Downing went 3-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the Cougars. Kelley had a 1-for-3 day at the plate with three RBIs in the victory and Lefebvre was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

-Senior Patrick Robinson (Watertown, Conn.) earned the win on the mound for Clark pitching seven innings, allowing just one earned run and striking out five batters. He improves to 2-0 this season.

-Clark collected 14 total hits in the victory.


-Clark travels to MIT on Wednesday, April 11th for a NEWMAC game at 3:30 p.m. in Cambridge, Mass.

-Emerson travels to Lasell on Thursday, April 12th for a 7:00 p.m. start.
