-The Lead: The Clark University baseball team dropped a pair of NEWMAC games with the Lyons of Wheaton College on the road on Saturday afternoon. Senior Teddy Downing (Cambridge, Mass.) picked up four hits on the day along with three RBIs to lead the Cougars at the plate. He now leads Clark with 28 hits on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game #1: Wheaton 3, Clark 0
-Sophomore Trevor Marques (Lincoln, R.I.) opened the game up in the bottom of the fourth with a single to center field, picking up an RBI as his classmate Nick Raposo (Johnston, R.I.) scored.
-In the seventh inning, the Lyons were able to get back on the board as senior Chris Ruocco (Lexington, Mass.) doubled to center field, allowing Matt Cook to cross home.
-Junior Jimmy Gianquitti (North Scituate, R.I.) was 1-1 with an RBI in the eighth inning to make the scoreline 3-0.
-Brady Furdon (Natick, Mass.) got the start and the win for the Lyons, pitching eight complete innings while giving up just two hits to the 26 batters he faced. Furdon also struck out eight and only gave up one walk. John Mikosz (Southington, Conn.) came in for relief in ninth and recorded a save while striking out two.
-Downing and sophomore Andrew Thibault (Nashua, N.H.) each recorded a hit for the Cougars.
Game #2: Wheaton 12, Clark 9
-Clark started the game off strong, holding the Lyons scoreless for three innings while they picked up a run in the second, third, and fourth. Junior Zach Kelley (Hadley, Mass.) homered to center field in the top of the second to put the Cougars up 1-0. Downing earned an RBI when sophomore Dylan Horn (Sterling, Conn.) crossed home (2-0) and freshman Chris Radovic (Fairfield, Conn.) homered to right field in the top of the fourth to extend Clark's lead to 3-0.
-Wheaton got back in the game in the bottom of the fourth and was able to score two more times in the fifth thanks to a Ruocco single and a Raposo double (4-3).
-In the sixth inning, senior Ryan McKeon (Johnston, R.I.) doubled to left center allowing Jared Sharkey (West Bridgewater, Mass.) to score. Willy Boyd (Orleans, Mass.) contributed with a sac bunt to help = Marques cross home and Gianquitti was able to reach first on an error, allowing McKeon to score (7-3).
-Sharkey doubled into center field in the seventh to push Raposo and Ruocco around the bases while pinch-hitter Conor Gammond (Spring Lake, N.J.) singled through the right side to advance Bryant Salkind (Rochester, Mass.) home setting the game at 10-4.
-A single from Thibault scored Downing in the top of the eighth inning and brought the Cougars within five (10-5).
-Raposo and Gammond each picked up an RBI in the eighth, extending the Lyons lead to 12-5. The Cougars gave one last push in the ninth, scoring three runs, thanks to a two RBI double from Downing, and RBI from Thibault and one from Radovic. Their run would end there and the Lyons took the final 12-9 victory.
-Dan Southerland (Dartmouth, Mass.) picks up the win for Wheaton, pitching six innings while striking out five.
-Downing led Clark going 2-for-5 with three RBIs.
-Clark hosts Castelton State on Monday, April 2nd at 3:30 p.m.
-Wheaton hosts Endicott on the same day at 4:00 p.m.
