Clark Sweeps Babson in Opening NEWMAC Games

THE BASICS

-The Lead: The Clark University baseball team swept the Beavers of Babson College in a pair of New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) games on Saturday afternoon. The two games were the first conference games for both teams in 2018. The Cougars improve to 8-3 overall and 2-0 in the NEWMAC.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game #1: Clark 8, Babson 7

-Clark scored seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Sophomore Andrew Thibault (Nashua, N.H.) led off with a hard hit ball to second base and Ryan Ruhlin (Portland, Maine) moved him to second with a solid bunt down the third base line. A walk for Kyle Shaw (Litchfield, N.H.) loaded the bases and a single to left from Dylan Horn (Sterling, Conn.) put the Cougars on the board (1-0). Bonicki sent a two RBI double to centerfield to extend their lead to 3-0 and junior Zach Kelley (Hadley, Mass.) earned an RBI on a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Horn (4-0). Sophomore Derek Lefebvre (Groton, Mass.)  found a gap in left center field to score Bonicki (5-0). On his second appearance at the plate in the inning Thibault earned an RBI on a single to right field. Nick Jordan (Seaford, N.Y.) crossed home plate for the final run of the inning as the Cougars took a 7-0 lead heading into the top of the sixth.

-Babson earned back three runs in the sixth. With senior David Lennon (Windermere, Fla.) on base junior Brian McHale (Ramsey, N.J.) homered over the left field fence (7-2). Sophomore Matthew Valente (Wyckoff, N.J.) earned an RBI when senior Ryan Arena (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) came home and the Beavers trailed by four runs (7-3).

-Horn tallied his second hit of the game to lead off in the bottom of the sixth. Senior Teddy Downing (Cambridge, Mass.) singled to left field to score Horn and extend Clark's lead to 8-3.

-Babson scored two runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Lennon singled up the middle for an RBI and McHale earned an RBI with a sacrifice fly ball to right field and the Beavers closed the gap to 8-5 heading into the top of the eighth inning. The visitors got three quick outs in the bottom of the inning and were back at the plate for two more runs scored in the top of the eighth. Senior Mark Webber (Norwell, Mass.) earned both RBIs with a double to left center and the Beavers trailed by just one run heading into the final inning.

-Junior Cal Slepkow (Rehoboth, Mass.) earned the victory on the mound for the Cougars and improves to 4-0 this season. Downing earned his third save of the season and added a strikeout as the Cougars took the 8-7 victory.

-Bonicki led the Cougars going 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBIs.

Game #2: Clark 8, Babson 4

-Clark got things started with five early runs in the bottom of the second inning. Kelley and Lefebvre both singled to center field and a single from Thibault to left loaded the bases. Kelley scored and Steven Mooney (Buffalo, N.Y.) earned an RBI when Lefebvre crossed home plate (2-0). Horn cranked a ball over the left field fence for a three run homerun and the 5-0 lead.

-Babson added three runs in the top of the fourth inning when Webber sent a ball over the right field fence for a three run homerun (5-3). The visitors added another run in the top of the seventh. Junior Eric Jaun (Loveland, Ohio) tripled to right center to start things off and Edward Lehr (Byram Township, N.J.) sent him home with a sacrifice fly to right field and the Beavers trailed by just one heading into the bottom of the seventh (5-4).

-The Cougars added three insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Downing got things started with a single to center field and a double from Jordan scored Downing and Kelley (7-4). A single to left from Thibault sealed the deal when Jordan crossed home and the Cougars took the 8-4 victory.

-Freshman Nick Guarino (New Haven, Conn.) earned the win on the mound for Clark and improves to 1-2 on the season. He pitched 6.2 innings, struck out two batters and allowed just four runs. Junior Dan Shaw (Arlington, Mass.) earned his second save of the season and struck out three batters.

-Horn led the Cougars with three RBIs and Jordan added two RBIs in the victory.

-Clark hosts Massachusetts Maritime on Sunday, March 25th for two non-conference games starting at 11:00 a.m. Babson hosts Plymouth State on Monday, March 26th at 3:30 p.m.
