Clark Splits Doubleheader with Thomas More in RussMatt Finale

-The Lead: The Clark University baseball team split a doubleheader with the Saints of Thomas More College in their final games of the 2018 RussMatt Invitational.


Game #1: Clark 2, Thomas More 1

-The Saints took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Junior Sam Hauer (Cincinnati, Ohio) got the bats moving with a double to left center and came home when senior Tyler Smith (Independence, Ky.) put the ball into play.

-With two runners on base in the top of the third the Cougars made three outs in a row including a strikeouts from junior pitcher Cal Slepkow (Rehoboth, Mass.) to hold the Saints at one.

-Thomas More was in scoring position again with Smith on third base in the top of the fourth inning. Slepkow earned another strikeout while sophomores Kyle Shaw (Litchfield, N.H.) and Dylan Horn (Sterling, Conn.) both came up with defensive plays to get the Cougars out of the inning,

-Clark found their groove in the bottom of the fifth. Kyle Shaw got a hold of a pitch and sent it to deep right center and found himself on third base with just one out. Horn rallied off of Shaw's hit with a double to left field that sent Shaw home and tied the game at 1-1.

-Senior Teddy Downing (Cambridge, Mass.) put the winning run across the plate when he singled to center field to send Horn home for the ultimate 2-1 victory.

-Kyle Shaw was 1-for-2 with a triple while Horn and Downing each posted RBIs in the victory.

-Slepkow earned the win on the mound going 5.2 innings with three strikeouts, two walks, and one earned run. He improves to 3-0 this season. Downing tallied his third save of the season when he came in to pitch 1.1 innings and fired three strikeouts to clinch the victory.

-Junior Adam Ruwe (Park Hills, Ky.) took the loss for the Saints going five innings with one strikeout, two walks, and two earned runs. Brandon Ward (Edgewood, Ky.) pitched an inning of relief for Thomas More.

Game #2: Thomas More 6, Clark 2

-Two runs in the bottom of the first and second innings for Thomas More gave them an early 4-0 lead.

-RBI doubles from junior Sean Lawrence (Independence, Ky.) and Boekmann put them ahead 2-0 in the first and an error from the Cougars gave them two more in the bottom of the second (4-0).

-Clark tightened the Saint's lead to 4-2 when freshman James Huber (Rochester, N.Y.) sent and RBI single to left center that scored Derek Lefebvre (Groton, Mass.) and Horn put the ball in play to score Nick Jordan (Seaford, N.Y.) in the top of the sixth.

-Thomas More pulled away again in the bottom of the sixth when Boekmann tripled to right field to send Lawrence home and a single bunt from freshman Brady Reynolds (White Oak, Ohio) scored him for the ultimate 6-2 victory.

-Lawrence earned the win on the mound for the Saints, pitching six innings, striking out four batters and walking just one batter.

-Freshman Nick Guarino (New Haven, Conn.) took the loss going 5.1 innings with four strikeouts, one walk, and four earned runs. He allowed just four hits in the game.


-Clark heads back to Worcester, Mass. and hosts Rivier on Tuesday, March 13th at 3:00 p.m.
