-The Lead: The Clark University baseball team picked up a pair of wins over the Golden Eagles of Saint Joseph's College of New York on Wednesday evening. Senior Teddy Downing (Cambridge, Mass.) had a walk-off hit up the middle to give Clark the 3-2 victory in the bottom of the 8th inning in game one of the day.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game #1: Clark 3, SJCNY 2
-Saint Joseph's posted two runs in the top of the first inning. An RBI single through the left side from Britt scored Burnett for the 1-0 lead. Senior Dylan Piscitell sent a ball to left field that scored junior Paul Britt to take the 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the inning.
-The Cougars wasted no time and tied up the game in the bottom of the first. Kyle Bonicki (Waterbury, Conn.) doubled to deep right center field to score Dylan Horn (Sterling, Conn.) and Zach Kelley (Hadley, Mass.) batted Bonicki in for the second run.
-The game went six innings with no runs scored and the Cougars sealed the deal in extra innings when a walk-off single up the middle from Downing gave Clark the ultimate 3-2 victory in the bottom of the eighth.
-Senior Conor Walsh (Marstons Mills, Mass.) earned the victory on the mound going seven innings, with four strikeouts and two runs scored. Downing earned the save pitching the final inning and striking out one batter. Walsh improves to 1-1 on the season. This was Downing's second save of the season.
Game #2: Clark 6, SJCNY 1
-The Golden Eagles started scoring in game two when sophomore Vincent Biordi sent an RBI single to center field that scored junior Michael Ferrufino.
-Clark tied it up in the top of the sixth inning. Bonicki walked and found his way into scoring position when he stole second base. Downing moved Bonicki to third and a sacrifice fly to center field from Kelley scored Bonicki (1-1).
-The Cougars fired it up in the top of the seventh, scoring five runs. Sophomore Nick Jordan (Seaford, N.Y.) singled through the left side to start things off. David Rotando (Cold Spring, N.Y.) laid down a bunt to move Jordan and put himself on first and a wild pitch put them on third and second. A walk for Tim Powell (Middletown, R.I.) loaded the bases and another wild pitch scored Jordan. Shaw earned an RBI with a sacrifice fly to centerfield that scored Rotando. Powell scored on a third wild pitch from the Golden Eagles. Downing and Horn scored the Cougar's final two runs and Clark took the final 6-1 victory.
-Senior Patrick Robinson (Watertown, Conn.) earned the win for Clark pitching six innings with six strikeouts, he improves to 1-0 on the season.
-Clark plays Thomas Moore on Friday, March 9th at 9:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, Fla.
