Cougars Cruise to Victory Over Spartans, 3-1

-The Lead: The Clark University baseball team fought to a 3-1 victory over the Spartans of Aurora College on Monday afternoon. They are now 2-1 in Florida and 3-2 overall this season.


-Clark took the 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when an infield single scored sophomore Derek Lefebvre (Groton, Mass.) from third base.

-Kyle Bonicki (Waterbury, Conn.) got a hold of a pitch that he sent to deep right center field to get things started in the bottom of the third inning and scored when the Spartans decided to make a play on Teddy Downing's (Cambridge, Mass.) grounder to shortstop (2-0).

-Aurora scored in the top of the fifth inning with two outs when junior Jeff Mayes (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) singled to second base and sent sophomore Colin Rivard (Naperville, Ill.) across home plate (2-1).

-The Cougars scored again in the bottom of the seventh. Bonicki sent a ball up the middle for his second hit of the day and was able to put himself in scoring position when he beat out the throw for a stolen base.

-Junior Zach Kelley (Hadley, Mass.) doubled to center field and earned an RBI in the bottom of the seventh when Bonicki scored his second run of the day and gave Clark the ultimate 3-1 victory.


-Bonicki was 2-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored in the victory for Clark. Sophomore Andrew Thibault (Nashua, N.H.) went 2-for-4 with one RBI while Downing and Kelley both added RBIs for the Cougars.

-Mayes was 1-for-4 with one RBI in the setback for the Spartans.

-Junior Dan Shaw (Arlington, Mass.) earned the win on the mound for Clark and improves to 1-0 on the season. Shaw went seven innings with six strikeouts, three walks, and just one earned run. Downing got the save for Clark when he came in and the Cougar's led by just two runs. Downing pitched two innings, collected three strikeouts and gave up no runs.

-Senior John Barnes (LaGrange, Ill.) took the loss for Aurora and falls to 0-2 this season. He went 5.2 innings, struck out six batters, and gave up two runs.


-Clark is back at the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex on Wednesday, March 7th when they play St. Joseph's (L.I.) in a pair of games at 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.
