Owls Soar to Non-Conference Victory Over Clark

-The Lead: The Clark University baseball team dropped a non-conference battle with the Owls of Keene State College on Tuesday evening at Granger Field. The Cougars are now 1-1 on the season and head to Florida on Friday, March 2nd for seven games in the RussMatt Invitational.


-The Owls jumped out to an early 3-0 lead with three runs in the top of the first inning. With the bases loaded John Tarascio (Wethersfield, Conn.) sent a long ball to right field for a sacrifice fly ball that scored Mac Suthers (Strafford, N.H.) for the 1-0 lead.

-Keene State sophomore Connor Walsh (Goffstown, N.H.) found a gap in left field to earn himself an RBI when Devin Springfield (Jaffrey, N.H.) crossed home to give Keene a 2-0 advantage. A single to right field from junior Nate Rossi (Hampstead, N.H.) scored his classmate Connor Longley (Foxboro, Mass.) to finish the inning with the 3-0 lead.

-Clark added two in the bottom of the first. Kyle Bonicki (Waterbury, Conn.) got things started for the Cougars when he doubled to left field. Junior Zach Kelley (Hadley, Mass.) loaded the bases when he put the ball up the middle and a walk from freshman Kai Herko (Friday Harbor, Wash.) gave the hosts their first run as they trailed 3-1 in the bottom of the first with one out.

-Sophomore Derek Lefebvre (Groton, Mass.) sent a sacrifice fly ball to right field that scored senior Teddy Downing (Cambridge, Mass.) and the Cougars trailed by just one run heading into the top of the second inning, 3-2.

-The Owls added a run in the top of the third and two runs in the top of the fifth with RBIs from Christian Bourgea (Litchfield, N.H.) and Walsh to extend their lead to 6-3.

-A two-run homerun from junior David Sevigny (Rocky Hill, Conn.) in the sixth inning sealed the deal for the Owls as they took home the ultimate 8-3 victory.


-Bonicki and Downing were both two-for-three on the day. Downing added an RBI in the setback.

-Senior Conor Walsh (Marstons Mills, Mass.) took the loss on the mound for Clark going three innings with four hits, four earned runs, and four strikeouts.

-Freshman Nick Guarino (New Haven, Conn.) pitched the last four innings for Clark and gave up no hits, no runs, and struck out two batters.

-Walsh led the Owls going two-for-four at the plate while Sevigny went one-for-three with his homerun.

-Junior Brandon Heath (Charleston, N.H.) earned the win for Keene State. He pitched six innings, allowed just two hits, no runs scored, and struck out five batters.


-Clark heads to Florida on Friday morning for their spring break games. They take on Penn State-Abington at Lake Myrtle Main in Auburndale, Fla. on March 3rd at 2:30 p.m.

-Keene State is at The College of New Jersey on March 3rd for a doubleheader at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
