BABSON PARK, Mass.—Sophomore Connor Gill (Sterling, Mass.) tossed a six-hit shutout and junior Ryan Arena (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and sophomore Brian McHale (Ramsey, N.J.) both homered as Babson College defeated visiting Clark University, 5-0, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball action at Govoni Field.
Arena, who scored twice, and McHale both had two hits for the Beavers in support of Gill, who recorded his first career shutout and his second complete game in three starts. He matched his career high with seven strikeouts and walked just one to move to 3-0 on the year.
Senior Adam Chochrek (Foxboro, Mass.) went 3-for-4 and junior Teddy Downing (Cambridge, Mass.) added a pair of hits for the Cougars. Fellow junior Patrick Robinson (Watertown, Conn.) suffered the loss allowing three earned runs on six hits while striking out four and walking three to fall to 1-3 on the season.
The Green and White jumped on top in the first as McHale cranked the first home run of his career with one out and Arena launched his seventh of the year two batters later for a 2-0 lead.
Gill struck out the side in the first and retired 10 of the first 11 batters he faced for the Beavers. Clark put runners on first and second with two outs in the fourth after back-to-back singles by Downing and Chochrek, but Gill induced a fly out to center field to end the threat.
Babson turned the second of its three double plays to end the top of the sixth, and then extended its lead with two more runs in the bottom of the frame. Arena doubled and sophomore Eric Jaun (Loveland, Ohio) reached on an error, and both came around to score on an RBI double from first-year Sean Harrington (Walpole, Mass.) and a run-scoring single from junior Mark Webber (Norwell, Mass.) to make it 4-0.
The Green and White tacked on another insurance run in the eighth as Halpin tripled to deep left center and then raced home on an errant relay throw for a 5-0 edge.
Babson returns to action on Thursday when it hosts Southern Maine at 3:30 p.m., while Clark begins a three-game series against Coast Guard on the road on Friday at 3:30 p.m.
