Worcester, Mass. – Men’s soccer striker Oscar Zapata (Lima, Peru) and volleyball outside hitter Marina Ramos (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) have been named Cougars of the Month for October 2014 it has been announced.
The month of October was one the best of Zapata’s career as he scored all nine of his goals during the eight contests the Cougars’ played. Included in those contests were multi-goal efforts in a tie against Springfield College (October 4) and Framingham State (October 30) and a hat trick (three goals) versus Emmanuel College (October 20).
In addition to his athletic accomplishments, Zapata was named to the New England Women’s And Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Academic All-Conference team for the second time in his career and was also named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District First-Team.
With his collegiate career now complete, Zapata finished fourth on the school’s all-time goals scored list (33) and tied for seventh on the points scored list (69).
As Zapata’s career comes to a close, Ramos’ has taken off in incredible fashion. She helped lead the Cougars to their second consecutive playoff appearance with several huge performances during the conference slate.
Without question, her biggest showing came during a heart-stopping 3-2 come-from-behind win over Wellesley – the program’s first win over the Blue since 2004. In that thrilling win, she finished with 17 kills and 17 digs – an effort that led to her being named to NEWMAC Co-Player of the Week.
With her freshman season complete, she finished ranked fifth in the league in kills per set (3.27) and totaled 278 overall kills – good for seventh on the school’s single season list.
Both student-athletes will await word on any postseason awards which will be announced later this month.
