NEWMAC Quarterfinal Preview: No. 5 Clark at No. 4 Wheaton

Worcester, Mass.—The Clark University women's volleyball team finished the regular season with an 18-9 overall record and 6-4 record in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC)  action. They earned the 5th seed to move on to NEWMAC tournament play and will play at Wheaton College on Tuesday, October 31st at 7:00 p.m.

Clark senior, Marina Ramos (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) leads the league in kills with a total of 436 and kills per set (4.64). She has been named the NEWMAC Volleyball Offensive Athlete of the Week once this season. Junior Rayme Quiban (Seattle, Wash.)  is a three-time NEWMAC Defensive Athlete of the Week and leads the conference in digs with 520 and digs per set (5.36). Junior Ana Mercado (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) is 5th in the conference in kills with 317 and kills per set (3.30)

The Cougars average 12.37 kills per set with a .215 hitting percentage. Freshman Sophia Torino (Los Angeles, Calif.) leads the team with 710 total assists and 8.26 assists per set. As a team the Cougars average 11.57 assists per set. Quiban also leads the team in service aces with 30 on the season. Clark averages 1.48 aces per set, 17.91 digs per set and 0.97 blocks per set.

The Lyons of Wheaton College finished the regular season with a 23-8 overall record and 7-3 record in the conference for the No. 4 seed. Sophomore Becca Houghton (Emmaus, Penn.) leads the conference in service aces per set with 0.87. She has a total of 95 aces this season. Stephanie Martin (Centerville, Mass.) sits at 5th in the conference in digs with a total of 391.

Junior Claire Cansler (Newhall, Calif.) leads the Lyons offensively with 253 kills (2.48/set). As a team Wheaton posts 11.06 kills per set and a .173 hitting percentage. Houghton leads the team with a total of 904 assists and as a team the Lyons average 10.14 assists per set.

Earlier in the season Clark took a 3-0 victory over the Lyons by set scores of 25-15, 25-16, and 25-20.

The volleyball championship consists of seven teams that will compete for the title which will begin on Tuesday, October 31st with the quarterfinal round.

After an impressive 10-0 regular season record in conference play and a #22 national ranking, MIT has earned the No. 1 seed and will host the semifinals and championship rounds.

Earning the No. 2 seed in a head to head tie break goes to Babson (8-2) who will host No. 7 Springfield (5-5) in quarterfinal action. No. 3 Wellesley (8-2) will host a quarterfinal round against No. 6 Coast Guard (5-5). In the third quarterfinal match No. 4 Wheaton (7-3) will host No. 6 Clark (6-4).

The winner of Springfield at Babson will battle with the winner of Coast Guard at Wellesley in semifinal action on Saturday, November 4th at MIT while the winner of Clark at Wheaton will take on MIT. The semifinal winners will compete for the title on Sunday, November 5th

No. 6 Coast Guard at No. 3 Wellesley – 7:00 p.m.

No. 5 Clark at No. 4 Wheaton – 7:00 p.m.

Semifinals: Saturday, November 5th (at MIT)

Winner No. 4/5 vs. No. 1 MIT  – 1:00 p.m.

Winner No.3/No. 6 vs. Winner No. 2/7 – 3:30 p.m.

Championship: Sunday, November 6th (at MIT)

Semifinal Winners – 1:00 p.m.
