Women's Tennis Clinches NEWMAC Victory Over Smith

THE BASICS

-The Lead: In what ended up being a five hour long match, the Clark University women's tennis team battled to a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory over the Pioneers of Smith College on Friday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Smith started the day with a victory at #1 Doubles as senior Samantha Peikes (West Hartford, Conn.) and sophomore June Lee (San Marino, Calif.) took down Clark senior Isabelle Long (Bellevue, Wash.) and freshman Jillian Skulsky (Marshield, Mass.), 8-3.

-Clark tied it up at #2 Doubles as sophomore Anna Gates (North Scituate, R.I.) and freshman Elizabeth Garfield (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) rallied to an 8-4 victory over sophomores Joanna Kim (Chicago, Ill.) and Emma Essenmacher (Delran, N.J.) (1-1).

-To finish out doubles play, Smith's Kara Van Allen (Kalamazzo, Mich.) and Allison Ahern (Minneapolis, Minn.) clinched a 9-2 victory over freshman Elizabeth Tchantouridze (Northfield Vt.) and sophomore Chlow Dunnell (Monclair, N.J.) for the 2-1 lead.

-Long rallied to a three-set victory over Peikes at #1 Singles by scores of 6-3, 5-7, and 6-4 as Clark tied the match at 2-2.

-#2 Singles was a Smith victory as Ahern took down Skulsky in two, 6-3 and 7-5 (3-2). The Cougars tied it up again when Gates earned a victory over Kim at #3 singles and Clark took their first lead of the day when Garfield cruised to 6-2 and 6-0 set victory over Essenmacher at #4 singles (4-3).

-The Cougars extended their lead to 5-3 with a victory at #5 singles from Tchantouridze (6-1, 6-1) and junior Maggie Tarbox (Lebanon, Conn.) grabbed the final victory for Clark at #6 singles with 6-1, 6-1 set wins over Smith's Paige Pryor (Fayetteville, N.C.) (6-3).

UP NEXT

-Clark hosts Babson on Saturday, April 14th in NEWMAC action at 2:00 p.m.

-Smith travels to MIT on the same day for a conference match starting at noon.
