Cambridge, Mass. – Gaby Suriano (San Salvador, El Salvador) advanced to the second round of action before falling this afternoon at MIT's DuPont Tennis Center at this year's International Tennis Association's (ITA) Women's Division III Regional Championship.
Suriano knocked off host participant Victoria Tam in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1 in the opening round, moving on to the second round where she met Melita Ferjanic of Trinity. Ferjanic, a freshman who has yet to play a collegiate match but entered the tournament seeded ninth, ousted Suriano in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2 to advance to the third round.
In doubles action, Suriano teamed with Sarah Sachs (Branford, Conn.) to face more familiar foes – Wheaton's Lyndsay Cooke and Alexandra Marlowe. The Lyons duo proved to be too much as Suriano and Sachs bowed out, 8-5.
Along with their teammates, Sachs and Suriano will be back in action on Tuesday when they head to Mount Holyoke for a NEWMAC match slated to begin at 5:00 p.m.
