Women's Basketball Powers to Overtime Victory Over Eagles

-The Lead: The Clark University women's basketball team edged the Eagles of Bridgewater College (Va.) in a non-conference, overtime matchup on Thursday afternoon. Freshman Jamad Fiin (Boston, Mass.) hit two 3-pointers in the final minute of overtime to lift the Cougars to the victory.


-The Cougars hopped on the board first with a successful drive to the basket from senior Haley Wilder (Rindge, N.H.) but it was the Eagles who dominated the first quarter.

-Cori Ouellette (Madison, Conn.) hit a long-range three pointer at the 2:13 mark to bring the Cougars within five points but a layup knocked down by Kaitlyn Lehan (Virginia Beach, Va.) in the final seconds gave Bridgewater the seven point advantge heading into the second stanza.

-Bridgewater led by 11 points, 29-18, at the half, but the Cougars outscored the Eagles 19-8 in the third quarter to even the score at 37-37. Clark scored the first five points of the fourth quarter from a three-pointer and layup made by Fiin to take a  42-37 lead with 9:06 to play in regulation. During Clark's run to take the lead, Bridgewater made just 2-of-17 shots from the floor.

-Bridgewater rallied and tied the score, 44-44, on a three-pointer by Briana Moore (Waynesboro, Va.) with 7:11 left in the fourth quarter. The Eagles regained the lead with 4:38 on the clock when Allie Coburn (Waynesboro, Va.) scored on a short jumper, making the score 48-47.

-With the score tied at 49-49, Bridgewater's Sydni Carey (Colonial Beach, Va.) put the Eagles up by two with a jumper, but freshman Idalis Miranda (Naugatuck, Conn) answered with a jumper for the Cougars to tie the score at 51-51 with 50 seconds remaining. The Eagles turned the ball over on their next possession, but Miranda missed a shot at the buzzer as the game headed to overtime.

-In the extra session, two foul shots by Madison Baum (Cheater, Va.) put the Eagles out front 57-55 with 2:11 on the clock. After Fiin made 1-of-2 at the line, Jessalyn Monday (Christiansburg, Va.)  made a pair of free throws for a 59-56 Bridgewater lead with 1:33 left.

-Fiin erased the deficit and tied the score with a three-pointer with 47 seconds to go, but Baum made two-of-two at the line to put the Eagles on top again, 61-59 with 25 seconds left to play.

-Fiin then missed a three-pointer, but she chased down the long rebound and hit her next shot from long range, giving the Cougars a one-point lead with nine seconds left. Lehan missed a shot for Bridgewater from in close and Clark's Wilder controlled the rebound. Wilder was fouled and made 1-of-2 foul shots with one second left for the final margin of victory, 63-61.


-Fiin led the Cougars with 20 points and seven rebounds while Miranda earned a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds in the victory.

-Clark shot 38.7% from the field while the Eagles shot just 25.3%.

-The Cougars shot an impressive 80% at the free throw line as they knocked down eight of ten baskets.

-The Cougars also edged the Eagles in rebounds, 53 to 47.

-Bridgewater forced 25 turnovers by Clark and converted those into 19 points of their own.

-Clark's bench stepped up with 28 points en route to the victory.


-Clark takes on York College (Pa.) tomorrow, Friday Deceber 29th at 9:00 p.m. in their final game of the Land of Magic Classic.
