Trio Honored By NEWMAC

Babson Park, Mass. – Three Clark student-athletes have been named New England and Women’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) players of the week the conference office announced on Monday evening.

All-Americans Eileen Garcia (New York, N.Y.) and Ryan Garr (Kingston, R.I.) were named Diver and Swimmer of the Week, while field hockey standout Mel Melkonian (Worcester, Mass.) grabbed co-player of the week honors.

Garcia opened up her junior campaign with a pair of sweeps on the 1-meter and 3-meter diving boards in wins over Babson and Bridgewater State. She had scores of 238.60 and 235.80 on the one-meter board and 245.20 and 238.05 at three meters. This marks the seventh time she has received the weekly award in her career.

Garr was absolutely brilliant in the opening two weeks of his junior campaign. Against Babson, Garr posted wins in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke, then teamed with Dan Howard (Bow, N.H.), Cooper Hart (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.) and Lamar Duffy (Pen Argyl, Pa.) to claim first place in the 200-yard medley relay. Then in a win over Bridgewater State, he won the 50-yard backstroke as well as the 200-yard backstroke. The award for Garr is the fourth time he has been honored by the conference.

Melkonian, meanwhile, earns the weekly award for the fourth time in her career and the third time this season after a standout week in which she recorded a pair of hat tricks. In a 5-0 win over Wheelock, she recorded four goals. Then in a win-and-get in scenario with Wellesley, she scored three first half goals in the 4-0 win that put Clark in the postseason.

Swimming & Diving returns to the pool on Friday when it takes part in the Ted Mullin Hour of Power to benefit cancer research, while field hockey returns to the field on Tuesday against Wheaton in the NEWMAC quarterfinals.
