Clark Mourns Sudden Passing Of George LeGacy

Worcester Telegram Obituary

Worcester, Mass. – The Clark University Department of Athletics is saddened to share the news of the sudden passing of recently hired softball assistant coach George LeGacy.

LeGacy, who spent 13 seasons on the coaching staff of New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rival WPI – the last six as head coach - was named an assistant coach in early August.

He was born in Worcester the son of George W. LeGacy, Sr. and Barbara (Alix) Legacy and was a veteran of the United States Army serving during the Vietnam War.

A talented musician, who played the bass and sang lead, was a graduate of Nichols Junior College.

He worked as a vice president at Guaranty Bank in Worcester as well as a consultant before pursuing a career in coaching.

During his six seasons as the Engineers' skipper, LeGacy had a pair of 20+ win seasons, including a school-record 24 victories in 2012 and the second-most wins in a season in 2011 when WPI posted a 21-18 ledger.

He won more than 100 games during his tenure, made two trips to the NEWMAC Tournament and developed six all-conference players.

LeGacy enjoyed success coaching youth softball teams. For 16 years, he was the head coach of the Central Mass Sting, an under-19 ASA-Pony summer travel team.

The LeGacy name is no stranger to Clark University softball. Michelle LeGacy (1995-98), coach LeGacy's daughter, is the Cougars' all-time leader in several statistical categories including wins (72), complete games (84) and innings pitched (622.1). She helped lead Clark to three consecutive postseason bids and three straight seasons of 20 wins or more.

Calling hours in his memory will be held on Friday, January 17 at O'Connor Brothers Funeral Home in Worcester from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.  His funeral is Saturday, January 18th at 10:00 a.m. at O'Connor Brothers, 592 Park Avenue. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery.
