Williamstown, Mass. – The doubles combination of Dan Stein (Newton, Mass.) and Diego Angel (Lima, Peru) pulled off a major upset in advancing to the second round of the International Tennis Association's Men's Division III Regional Championship on Friday afternoon.
The Cougar duo pulled off a stunning 9-8 (7-5) victory over MIT's Edwin Zhang and Matt Skalak the second-seeded doubles team at the event. It avenges an 8-6 loss to that pair in the NEWMAC championship match last April.
Amazingly, Stein and Angel had played just two matches together prior to today's match – both of which were losses last season. That wasn't the case today as the Cougars will now face the Williams College combination of Felix Sun and Alexander Schidlovsky on Saturday.
On the singles side, Clark's two participants – Angel and freshman Antoine Martin (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) both lost in the first round. Angel dropped a straight set 6-4, 6-4 decision to Bowdoin College's Kyle Wolstencroft, while Martin fell 6-4, 6-2 to sixth-seeded Matt Bettles of Bates College.
