The Lead: The Clark University men's soccer offense exploded with sixteen shots and three goals in a 3-0 non-conference victory over the UNE Nor' Easters on Wednesday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
-After 40 minutes of scoreless play, the Cougars got on the board first with five minutes on the clock. Freshman Alex Nicholson (Barrington, R.I.) found Sean Munroe (Silver Spring, Md.) who dodged UNE goalkeeper, Will Shearon (Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, England) to give the visitors the 1-0 lead.
-After the halftime break Clark and UNE battled it out on both ends of the field for the first 30 minutes of the second half.
-Freshman Cooper Richards (Wellesley, Mass.) scored Clark's second goal of the night with 11 minutes on the clock following a save made by Shearon that he picked up and pushed to the back of the net for the 2-0 lead.
-With a comfortable lead and just under two minutes to play, the Cougars secured the victory with a third and final goal off of a corner kick. Evan Jurkowski (Ludlow, Mass.) sent the ball in to Isaac Smith (Baton Rouge, La.) who headed the ball over to Ethan Ziemba (Glenn Gardner, N.J.) who launched the ball to the back of the net for the final 3-0 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
-The Cougars outshot the Nor' Easters 16 to eight (11 to three in the second half).
-Clark was awarded eight corner kicks on the night while UNE was awarded just one.
-UNE freshman goalkeeper, Will Shearon made seven saves in net and drops to 0-4 on the season.
-Freshman Melvin Vincent (Rochester, Mass.) earned the win in net for Clark and improves to 1-0 following his first collegiate appearance.
-Clark University hosts Springfield College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday, September 30th at 1:00 p.m.
-UNE hosts Roger Williams on the same day for a 12:00 p.m. Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) match-up.
