Kulik Named Chair Of NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Committee

Indianapolis, Ind. – David Kulik, head men’s soccer coach and associate athletics director at Clark (Mass.) University, has been named the chair of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Men’s Soccer Committee it has been announced. The appointment was made by the committee and confirmed by the NCAA Division III Championships Cabinet.

“I’m humbled to have been elected to serve the NCAA and the Division III Men’s Soccer body in this administrative capacity,” said Kulik, whose term begins on September 1.

As chair, Kulik will work with the other seven members of the committee to select and set the bracket for the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Tournament and Championship, represent the committee during tournament competitions, and assist in the execution of the Final Four. Division III men's soccer encompasses 385 team and nearly 8,000 student-athletes.

“David is a definite advocate for the student-athlete’s total experience and his work on this committee embodies that commitment,” said Sherard Clinkscales, Assistant Director of Championships at the NCAA and men’s soccer liaison.

Currently serving his third year as a member of the committee, Kulik credits former chair Joe Hakes, the athletics director at Milliken College, with piquing his interest in the position. "Joe was a leader with style, affability and efficient organizational skills,” said Kulik. “Our meetings were effective yet had personality which is one my goals as an administrator.”

He will succeed Chris Apple of the University of Rochester, who served as chair in 2009.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my first two years on the National committee and as the New England region chair and understand the responsibilities connected to being the National Chair,” said Kulik. “I am thrilled that we will be back in San Antonio for our Final Four in December.”

Coming off of his seventh consecutive winning season, Kulik is the two-time NEWMAC Coach of the Year (2005, 2008), the longest tenured coach in Cougar men’s soccer history and the first national sports chair in school history.

In his previous ten seasons at the helm, he has guided Clark to nine winning seasons and a berth in the NEWMAC Tournament in every season and is on the cusp of becoming the all-time winningest coach in program history.

Kulik’s shining moment at Clark came in 2008 when they Cougars finished the season at 11-5-2 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 20 years.

Prior to his arrival at Clark, Kulik held previous assistant coaching positions at Tufts University, Boston College and at Yale.

As a student-athlete, Kulik was an All-Ivy and All-New England performer. He served as team captain his senior season, and was part of Yale’s 4-1 victory over then defending national champions UCLA.

After graduation Kulik played professional soccer in the ASL for 3 seasons - two with the Boston Bolts and his last with the Miami Freedom.

Kulik’s coaching credentials include a U.S.S.F. “A” license and the NSCAA Advanced National Diploma.

A 1988 graduate from Yale with a B.A. in sociology, he holds a master’s in education from Tufts.
