Turgeon Named NEWMAC Academic All-Conference

Boston, Mass. – Clark University lacrosse sophomore Alex Turgeon (Holden, Mass.) has been named to the New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) academic all-conference team it was announced by Executive Director Patrick Summers.

In order to be honored, student-athletes must have earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale or 4.35 on a 5.0 scale after the 2013 spring semester, achieved second year academic status at their institution, and been a member of the varsity team for the entire season.

A management major with a concentration in marketing and sustainability sporting a 3.57 GPA, Turgeon appeared in 11 games, making nine starts as a short stick defensive midfielder. He did most of his damage transitioning the Cougars from defense to offense, helping Clark lead the NEWMAC in clear percentage at 86.9 (254-for-292).

"I am extremely proud of Alex," said head coach Jeff Cohen. "He has done so much academically, athletically and in the campus community in his time here. The sky's the limit for him."

He was a factor on the offensive end as well, finishing with four goals and an assist along with 22 groundballs as the Cougars' posted their first winning season in school history and advanced to the postseason for the first time ever.

Turgeon is no stranger to academic accolades since arriving at Clark. Back in December he and a partner were the winners of the University's U-reka! Big Idea Contest sponsored by the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Program to help improve Clark or the community. The top three finalists present their idea to an audience of student peers and begin campaigning for student votes. All three ideas win a portion of the final $5,000 award based on student vote rankings.

His team is in the process of developing an app that collects, brings together, and integrates Worcester events and opportunities as well as other activities occurring between college campuses.

He is also heavily in involved in other sustainability efforts on campus. Back in April he helped organize a campus clean up during Earth Week and serves as the Outreach Coordinator for the Clark Sustainability Collaborative (CSC).
