-The Lead: The Clark University men's basketball team concluded their 2017-18 season with a hard fought 75-70 loss to the Lyons of Wheaton College in NEWMAC action on Saturday afternoon. Lacking a smooth shooting stroke early, the Cougars fell behind by as much as twenty in the first half, and found themselves down twelve at half, before battling back to tie the game at 58 with seven minutes left. The Lyons were able to hold their own down the stretch to claim the win, and the #5 seed in the upcoming NEWMAC Men's Basketball Tournament.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Cougars started the game 2-0 on an offensive rebound and made jumper by junior, Luca McCormick (Fort Lauderdale, Fla)
-The Lyons, behind senior, Liam Bruno (Newton, Mass) and junior, Ryan Fogarty (Walpole, Mass) were able to heat up from the field, and in transition off Clark misses to take a commanding 28-8 lead, ten minutes into the game.
-The Cougars, behind Biko Gayman (Fort Pierce, Fla), and McCormick were able to quell the tide, and went in the locker room down 40-28 at the half.
-Gayman and freshman, Tyler Davern (Webster, Mass) were able to lead Clark on a 15-8 run to start the 2nd half, pulling within five, 48-43 six minutes in.
-A McCormick jumper with 12:45 left on the clock cut the Cougars deficit to three at 50-47.
-The Cougars were able to take a brief 54-53 lead with 10:18 left on the clock, but a quick made three by Wheaton junior, David Carbonello (Windham, NH) put the Lyons back on top, where they would stay for the rest of the game.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Gayman (19pts), and McCormick (15pts) led the way for the Cougars
-Bruno led all scorers in the contest with 25 points.
-The Lyons shot 54% from the field, while the Cougars shot 45%
-Clark has concluded their 2017-18 campaign.
-Wheaton will play in the upcoming NEWMAC Men's Basketball Tournament.
