THE BASICS

-The Lead: The Clark University men's basketball team suffered a setback to the Engineers of WPI in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday evening. Biko Gayman (Fort Pierce, Fla.) and John Pisacreta (Andover, Mass.) led the Cougars with 16 points each in the loss. Senior Chris Rodgers (Franklin, Mass.) posted a game high 21 points en route to victory for WPI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Half

-Junior Luca McCormick (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) got things rolling with a quick three-pointer to give Clark their first lead of the game just after tip-off. The Engineers responded with a 4-0 run highlighted by three pointers from Reid Walker and Dave Zielinski for the 10-3 advantage with 17:43 on the clock.

-A 3-0 rally from Clark brought them back within two points of the hosts with 13:46 to play, but that was as close as they would come in the half.

-Jake Wisniewski (Lithia, Fla.) and Rodgers both posted nine points in the first half to give the Engineers the 43-32 advantage heading into the halftime break.

Second Half

-Clark started off scoring in the second half with a made jump shot from Adam Converse (Woodstock, Conn.).

-With 6:32 to play the Engineers took their largest lead of the game, 77-56, following a 5-0 run that was jump started on a three-pointer from Dakota Wheeler (Easthampton, Mass.).

-A three from sophomore Kyle Coughlin (Beverly, Mass.) and a layup from freshman Eian Gannon (Clinton, Mass.) brought the Cougars back within 11 points with under two minutes to play, but the Engineers claimed the ultimate 85-72 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

-Gayman and Pisacreta led Clark with 16 points each while McCormick added 14 points in the setback.

-Rodgers led all scorers with 21 points to lead WPI to victory.

-WPI shot 56.7% from the field while the Cougars shot 45.8%. Both teams notched 32 rebounds.

-Clark is at MIT in Cambridge, Mass. on Wednesday, January 24th for a NEWMAC matchup at 7:00 p.m.

-WPI heads to Springfield College for some conference action on the same day at 8:00 p.m.
