Sophomores Shine In 4-1 Win

Leicester, Mass. – Visiting Clark University rebounded from its overtime loss on Tuesday to UMass-Dartmouth to post a 4-1 win over host Becker College on Saturday afternoon in field hockey action on Alumni Field.

The sophomore duo of Madeleine Lutts (Salem, Mass.) and Mel Melkonian (Worcester, Mass.) each registered a pair of goals for the now 3-1 Cougars. The loss drops the Hawks to 1-3.

Clark got on the board first at the eight minute mark when Lutts scored on a rebound of a Melkonian shot just off a corner.

Clark made it a 2-0 halftime score on a Melkonian tip off a drive from Tessa Mazzeo (Lincoln Park, N.J.) just outside the circle.

Becker cut the lead in half to 2-1 when junior midfielder Victoria Sirchia buried a drive from the top of the circle off a corner pass from Carly Barone just inside the left post past Clark goaltender Kate McGrath (Wilmington, Mass.).

Melkonian gave Clark an insurance goal minutes later and Lutts scored with a minute to go for the 4-1 final.

The goals for Melkonian – her ninth and tenth of the season – mark the third time in three games this season in which she has scored at least two goals.

Becker goaltender Nakita Gosselin, who was peppered by shots all afternoon, had 21 saves in the loss while McGrath finished with four stops for Clark.

The Cougars are back in action on Tuesday when they visit Nichols College at 7:00 p.m.
