Field Hockey Duo Named All Conference

Babson Park, Mass. – For the second consecutive season multiple members of the Clark University field hockey team have been named to the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) All-Conference team it was announced by the conference office on Tuesday.

Sophomore Mel Melkonian (Worcester, Mass.) and junior Meghan Lennon (Charlton, Mass.), were named first-team and second-team, respectively following the Cougars’ 11-7 campaign in 2010.

Melkonian, who becomes Clark’s first first-team honoree since current assistant coach Kaitlin Kelley was named to the squad in 2006, finished her second season with school-records of 32 goals and 75 points. She led the conference in several statistical categories, including shots (117), shots per game (6.50), points (75), points per game (4.17), goals (32) and goals per game (1.78). In 18 games she recorded six hat tricks and had seven game-winning goals. Melkonian was named NEWMAC player of the week on three separate occasions and her 32 goals were more or equaled to the total of three NEWMAC teams. Through 34 career contests, Melkonian has 51 goals, 18 assists and 120 career points – all three rank in the top ten in school history.

Lennon, meanwhile, emerged as an excellent two-way player for the Cougars en route to her first ever all-conference honor. She finished fourth on the team in goals and points and was second in assists. Her totals – six goals, six assists and 18 points were all career-highs. She started all 18 games as the Cougars advanced to the NEWMAC Tournament for the second straight season. In a 2-1 win over Nichols in the early part of the season, Lennon scored both goals, including the game-winner with less than a minute to play.

The future remains bright for the Cougars, who coming off of their most wins since 2004, return seven of their top eight scorers.
