Baseball Battles to Extra Inning Victory Over Springfield

THE BASICS

-Score: Clark University 6, Springfield College 4 (10 innings)

-Records: Clark (16-8, NEWMAC 8-3), Springfield (17-8-2, NEWMAC 6-2)

-Location: Springfield, Mass. (Archie Allen Field)

-The Lead: The Clark University baseball team took down the Pride of Springfield College in extra innings in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) showdown on Friday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Clark put up their first run in the top of the second inning. Sophomore Nick Jordan (Seaford, N.Y.) started things off with a double to right center and moved to third when freshman Chris Radovic (Fairfield, Conn.) grounded out to third base. Sophomore Ryan Ruhlin (Portland, Maine) earned the RBI with a single through the right side to score Jordan for the 1-0 lead.

-Springfield answered back with two runs in the bottom of the third when a two RBI single up the middle from freshman Jack Cooney (Pittsfield, Mass.) scored Chad Shade (Pittsfield, Mass.) and Brandon Russo (Lisbon, Conn.).

-The Cougars tied it up in the top of the fifth when sophomore Dylan Horn (Sterling, Conn.) crossed home plate on an RBI from Jordan. The Pride took the lead back in the bottom of the inning when Russo came home on an RBI ground out from Cooney (3-2).

-One more from the Cougars in the top of the sixth tied the score again. Radovic singled up the middle and after moving two bases, scored on an RBI single through the right side from Kyle Bonicki (Waterbury, Conn.) (3-3).

-Sophomore Jake Gleason (South Dennis, Mass.) put Springfield up 4-3 in the bottom of the eighth inning with a single up the middle that score senior Mark Joao (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.).

-The Cougars did not let up and tied the score for the third time when freshman James Huber (Rochester, N.Y.) singled down the left field line to score Zach Kelley (Hadley, Mass.) from second base.

-After a 1-2-3 inning in the field for Clark, they sealed the deal in the top of the 10th. Freshman Stephen Mooney (Buffalo, N.Y.) singled to second base and moved to second when Horn was hit by a pitch. Bonicki moved Horn to second and Mooney to third and reached on a fielder's choice. Senior Teddy Downing (Cambridge, Mass.) earned the game winning RBI with a single through the left side that scored Mooney for the 5-4 lead. Kelley gave the Cougars an insurance run when he sent a sacrifice fly ball to centerfield that sent Horn across home plate for the ultimate 6-4 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

-Downing struck out three batters in a row in the bottom of the tenth to clinch the victory for Clark and earn his second victory of the season (2-0). Downing went 2.2 inning and tallied six strikeouts.

-Junior Cal Slepkow (Rehoboth, Mass.) went 7.1 innings for Clark with five strikeouts.

-Jordan was 3-for-5 at the plate with an RBI while Downing went 2-for-5 with an RBI to help lead Clark to victory.

-Cole Donovan (Holderness, N.H.) took the loss on the mound for Springfield and falls to 1-1 on the season.

UP NEXT

-Clark hosts Springfield for two NEWMAC games tomorrow, Saturday, April 14th starting at 12:00 p.m. The team will recognize five seniors prior to the game for Senior Day.
