Baseball Drops Two with Mass Maritime

THE BASICS

-The Lead: The Clark University baseball team dropped a pair of non-conference games to the Buccaneers of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy on a chilly Sunday afternoon in Worcester. Sophomore Derek Lefebvre (Groton, Mass.) led the Cougars with five hits on the day.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game #1: Mass Maritime 11, Clark 9

-The Buccaneers scored six runs in the first inning to take an early 6-0 lead but the Cougars earned three runs back in the bottom of the inning on RBIs from junior Zach Kelley (Hadley, Mass.), sophomore Nick Jordan (Seaford, N.Y.) and freshman Kai Herko (Friday Harbor, Wash.).

-Mass Maritime added two more runs in the top of the second inning when Paul Sances (Middleboro, Mass.) singled to left centerfield to score senior Casey Furnas (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Kevin Troy (Braintree, Mass.) sent a two RBI double to left center field for the 9-3 advantage.

-The two teams traded runs in the bottom of the second and top of the third inning, but the Cougars went on to score a run in the fourth and three in the sixth inning to come back within two of the visitors. Sophomore Dylan Horn (Sterling, Conn.) doubled down the right field line in the bottom on the fourth and senior Teddy Downing (Cambridge, Mass.) sent him home with an RBI single (10-5).  In the bottom of the sixth Kyle Bonicki (Waterbury, Conn.) got on base with a single up the middle and a triple to deep center field from Downing brought the Cougars within four, 10-6. Downing and Kelley scored the final two runs of the inning (10-8).

-The Cougars were able to score one more run in the bottom of the seventh when a single to third base from Jordan scored Horn, but the Buccaneers held on to take the 11-9 victory.

-Jordan led the Cougars going 4-for-5 at the plate with three RBIs. Downing went 3-for-4 and added two RBIs in the setback.

-John Teehan (Hyde Park, Mass.) earned the win for Mass Maritime going four innings with three strikeouts.

Game #2: Mass Maritime 7, Clark 3

-Clark took the first lead of the game with two runs in the first inning. Downing tallied his fourth hit of the day and a double to left center field from Lefebvre scored Downing and Kelley for the 2-0 lead.

-The Buccaneers wasted no time and added three runs in the top of the second and two more in the top of the fourth to take the 5-2 lead. Senior Logan Sullo homered in the top of the seventh for two more runs as the visitors extended their lead to 7-2.

-With two outs sophomore Rudy Sarro (New Fairfield, Conn.) scored in the bottom of the seventh, but that was as close as Clark would come as the Buccaneers took home the 7-3 victory.

-Lefebvre led the Cougars going 2-for-3 with two RBIs in the loss.

-Mason Ashburn (East Freetown, Mass.) earned the win going all seven innings, striking out six batters and allowing just two earned runs. He improves to 1-1 on the season.

-Clark hosts MIT on Tuesday, March 27th for a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game at 3:30 p.m.

-Mass Maritime hosts Becker College on the same day at 4:00 p.m.
