Auburndale, Fla. – Iowa Wesleyan scored three runs in the top of the ninth, rallying for a 4-2 win over previously undefeated Clark University in non-league baseball at the RussMatt Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
Score: Iowa Wesleyan 4, Clark University 2
Records: Iowa Wesleyan 4-1; Clark University 2-1
Location: Lake Myrtle Field #6, Auburndale, Fla.
How It Happened:
The Cougars got on the board in the first as a pair of freshman got the Clark offense off and running. Ryan Rhulin (Portland, Maine) doubled to leadoff the second and then came around on a Nick Jordan (Seaford, N.Y.) single.
Iowa Wesleyan tied the game up in the fourth on a sacrifice fly but Clark jumped back in front in the seventh when back-to-back doubles from Tyler Hutchinson (Greene, Maine) and Kyle Bonicki (Waterbury, Conn.) gave the Cougars a 2-1 lead in support of Cal Slepkow (Rehoboth, Mass.).
Slepkow was strong on the hill for the Scarlet and White, hurling seven innings, allowing just six hits and one earned run while fanning five.
Reliever Cam Smith (Gorham, Maine) came in and got a 1-2-3 eighth but a leadoff single in the ninth got the momentum going in the Tigers' favor.
After an error by new reliever Josh Dobratz (Southington, Conn.) put runners on first and second with one out, three straight Iowa Wesleyan singles put them up to stay on their way to the 4-2 victory.
Inside The Boxscore:
The Tigers' Jake Dipego tossed 2.1 innings of hitless relief to earn the win for IWU. Teddy Downing (Cambridge, Mass.) had two hits of Clark's six hits on the afternoon.
